Do Southerners have accents?*Discuss*

Just wondering; do people in the South technically have an accent seeing as we pronounce things correctly(well most of us do) and do not use 'slang' words? Or does everyone technically have an accent as we all speak English in our own way so there technically isn't a 'correct' english accent?

What do you think?

Of course they have an accent ....we all have an accent which is then broken down into regional dialects.

I have to say OP that your statement made me snort a little, especially the bolded bits!!

I'm assuming that you are having a laugh, which I believe ( from watching the telly) is an idiom much used in the south east.

Personally I feel as if *I* don't have an accent but everyone else does, just wanted to see what other people thought, southerners and non-southerners alike; instead I got some strong hate from northeners.

Not neccesarily, at least I don't hear it used often, usually said in jest e.g. mocking someone.

Very good point.

If you listen to most national news reports every presenter virtually no regional dialect. From your post i would asume they all originate from the South.

This perpetuates the ideolgy that this is how english should be spoken. But do people from Essex not have accents?

But is having an accent a bad thing. I travelled a lot in my teens and the benefits of having a Scottish accent far exceeded the negatives. I am sure Geordies (my fav), the Irish and the Welsh would say the same.

I've noticed this too. Pretty much all newsreaders or announcers tend to have neutral Southern tones. Wonder why that is.

Maybe you should have worded it a little better then:thumbsup: you alienated yourself right from the off by stating WE (southerners) pronounce things correctly. How do you know i don't speak the queens english perfectly ? I think a speaking voice without any character is very very dull.

Not technically correct as there has to be a prime, which will have no accent. So for example if you took the way the Queen speaks as prime, then anybody who speaks differently has an accent but those that speak the same have none;-)

But then, who gives a XXXX
#34
nobody is aware of their own accent. because to them its the norm. to me my wife sounds perfectly normal yet our friends from nottingham can barely understand her. (welsh valleys accent)

don't ask me to explain because i cant remember the details about it but technically, the Geordie accent/use of words is the oldest in England (something to do with vikings i think) so anyone who speaks differently is technically doing an accent whereas geordies aren't.

Again +1,
although very very dull is perhaps one 'very' too many. :-D

Re newsreaders, there are plenty of accents I hear , in particular if you count in the weather forecasters, including ( but not only) Welsh, Irish, Midlands, North and Scottish.
I think there is also, maybe, some confusion in your mind, OP, between South and 'Home Counties'. I live in the South - the West of the South, where accents and dialects are very strong.
