"Do you need any help packing?" and things checkout people have said/done to you

It seems Tesco have released a policy in recent months that tells all checkout staff they MUST ask whether the customer 'needs help packing' no matter what. Nice idea, but oh man there has to be a limit!

I was in Tesco yesterday and bought a Tesco Value wholemeal bread @ 37p. At the checkout the lovely girl (I think she was new) asks me whether I need any help packing it. I kinda rolled my eyes and said something like "hey, I'm a big strong guy, I reckon I can get it out of here without even using a bag *wink*". She went all red and I think it hit her that company policies don't always make sense.

Lurrvely checkout girl though, I hope she in there tomorrow when I go to buy a pack of 23p Polos!!

Anyway, I'm wondering what odd or funny things (if any) checkout supermarket people have done to you?

The big strong guy on the till was very shocked today as I just said "its ok 'I don't need any help packing", and he said , Oh did I ask ?? and I said "dunno 'but I answered anyway"...........how bad is that? answering before he even said it!!!! If we hadn't been laughing so much it might have sounded a bit rude of me, but we both ended up giggling as neither of us were sure if he'd said it or not!

they would soon stop if everyone said "yes please"
#5

I was helping my girlfriend move house the other day when we nipped into Tesco to get some lunch. When asked if we needed help with packing, i told the checkout lady to get some boxes and get round to our house ASAP.

She just looked at me funny.

I hate this, I really don't know why but I get into a proper panic when I'm at the till and it's all piling up and then the dreaded "that'll be £xxx Sir" is said, and I'm scrambling to put things into bags, get my wallet out, etc.

It's complete hell for a matter of seconds! I reckon something happened in a supermarket years ago and I've supressed the memories or something. Shame whatever it was didn't involve Miss. Helpful from Tesco. :w00t:

Lidl never offer packing help, they really don't give a **** in there. I saw this poor old woman in a right state the other day and the selfish plum behind the checkout just sat there staring at her.. went over and packed her tins for her - took 20 seconds, put a smile on her face, made me feel better and by the look of it made the Lidl guy feel like a little shrimp.

I was in my local Salisbury's a couple of weeks ago, waiting that the checkout with one of those half-size trolleys, shopping on the conveyor belt, idly eyeing up the woman in front of me who was still packing her stuff in to bags and being assisted by someone from a local sports club trying to raise funds (you know the sort, bucket of change on the checkout, brightly colour t-shirt, always put your potatoes on top of your bread...).

I was in a world of my own when the sporty assistant person said 'do you want to pass me your trolley so I can put these in?' indicating towards the pile of packed bags. snapping out of my daze and not being full 'with it', I pushed it over and she began putting the bags in. I was stood thinking 'well that was a bit rude' to myself when the woman I'd been eyeing up gave me a very odd look and told the assistant, still putting bags in the trolley, that we were not actually together and that wasn't her trolley!

I realised what had happened and felt like a right fool, I must've looked like I was trying to pass myself off as this poor womans other half! she probably thought I was some sort of weird stalker!

She still nicked my trolley though... b***h :D

i used to work on checkouts for tesco when i was a student at college....we were told to ask if the customer needed help it was called "ECOH" PROUNOUNCED "ECKO" IT MEANS "Every Customer Offered Help" lol was a pain in the ar$e having to constantly say the same old rubbish i once said to an asain lady "hello there madam would u like any help with ur packing?" she gave me a dirty look and looked offended...she replied "what did u call me?!" lol she thought i had said a certin word which sounds like packing lol!

We have the "Echo" system in Waitrose..
E-escourt the customer to the product
C- Chat along the way
H-Hand the product to the customer
O - Offfer "Any other assistance"

Most checkout staff are great & helpful esp when you have the kids with you.

The only really bad one I have seen was a middle aged man on a checkout who was trying to convince the old lady in front of me that she hadn't given him enough money - and got her so confused that she got out another £20 ... at which point I stepped in and went through the sum with him ... and then he didn't even apologise to her! Was the money really going to go in the till, or in his pocket? He got really narky with her ...

Just read through the thread and can't believe it's now 23p for a packet of polos!

When my brother was only young he once ran over to my dad after talking to a checkout girl shouting "Dad!! She's 23!!".

The story goes that my dad hadn't even asked him to find out. :p

Classic !

Its all a conspiracy, they will help you to pack then charge you for the bags they use when the 5p pricing comes in, since they usually put 3 item per bag that will add up over time!!!!

lol

Having at various stages worked on a supermarket checkout I can confirm there are many ways to wind up your "difficult" customer including:

Make sure you pick the light stuff first and then the heavy stuff.
Where the customer has more than one of the same item make sure you put them through at separate times
Go very quickly
Go very slowly
Chat to the next operator,
Chat to the customer behind.
Gently tut when putting through unhealthy items
When putting through embarrassing items like condoms, ky, femfresh etc pretend the item won't scan and either ask the next operator in a loud voice the price or hold the item up in the air and press the bell.
Throw any soft fruit down the checkout chute so it bruises.
Make sure things like cream cakes upside down.
Pretend to tighten bottle tops on shampoos etc but in fact loosen them.
Accidentally drop their change when giving it to them.

That's just a few, there is a much longer list for the more difficult customers.

Moral of the story ? Be nice to your checkout operator and treat them how you would expect to be treated :)

lol checkout terrorism.

This isn't in supermarkets but I've get really put off going to Matalan because they alllllways ask at the checkout if you have an email address to send you their 'special' email and then you always have to tell them that you've already done and if that wasn't bad enough sometimes they have people lurking outside the store asking you for your email address or worst of all people who creep up on you when you're shopping in there and ask you. Drives me mad! :x
#38
What about the little "funny" replies you get to this question though?

Like "No but you can help me pay if you want! Hohohhohoho" (Not Santa)
#39
I used to work at Blockbuster and we had this silly '5 Steps' (or something similar) thing & one of them was to ask the customer how they would be paying, even if they were waving money/a credit card at you!

Unsurprisingly, we got a lot of offers to pay in kind too....*sigh*
