Do you really believe in 'heaven' and 'hell' or do you just use the terms as something to say on morbid occasions?

As above. Was surprised by all the 'they are together in heaven' comments on the thread about Ben, the 2nd honeymoon robbery victim, who died today.

I suspect that many people simply use the terms 'heaven' and 'hell' as a kind a cliche for morbid occasions; something to say that is inoffensive and somehow 'appropriate'. But maybe I'm wrong and most people actually believe that an afterlife exists...

i believe in pergutry and heaven but not necessarily hell

a soul goes to pergutry (sp) and then eventually may go to heaven
#2
I personally dont believe in heaven, once your dead your dead imo. i just cant pull myself round to believe that there is a eternal afterlife

Tell me more about this 'soul' then. Does it exist? Does it have feelings? Does it remember the whole life that it occupied on earth, and can it interact with other 'souls'? Have sex, party, play video games, pray...? Or does it just float around unseeing, unfeeling, unknowing?

EDIT: For the uninitialted - Purgatory: A place of purification or temporary punishment in which the souls of those who die in a state of grace are made ready for heaven.

i would like to think so but my brain tells me no

Why would you like to think so?
#7
Nope, life is like a light switch. Once your dead that's it - your wormfood.

I just use heaven and hell as metaphors like everyone else.
#8
I believe in Heaven and Hell, I have been watching some housemates on Big Brother in Hell and some in Heaven :)

So you can't think of any negative consequences of believing in such unproven myths?

Metaphor for what? If you don't believe in existence after life, why propagate the myth? What good does it do? And when you meet others who talk about heaven, you assume they are lying about their beliefs to? :?

But you seem to know they exist? How do you know?

Only the young, the outwardly brave and the very foolish will deny outright the existence of Heaven and Hell.

It is surely human nature to keep all of ones options open and the shorter of breath and closer to death we get the more options we like to envisage.

All the time it's not hurting others I'll keep all my options open, logical or illogical.
#15
I believe there is something.
Heaven and hell are just names.
Just because we don't see the logic of it does not mean its not there.

Imagine trying to explain HUKD and the WWW to someone a few centuries back. You would have been done over for witchcraft.

NO.....

Well FACTS are that you live and then die, beyond that is unknown. Myths are unicorns, mermaids, goblins, fairies AND of course for some who may be agnostic heaven or hell

You live life and take your chances :whistling: may get hit by a bus tommorow (must wear clean pants just in case:p)

I believe that Heaven, Hell, the afterlife etc. are safety nets or something we convince ourselves of. Because our brains cannot comprehend an exsistence without its own functioning conciousness.

Pointless thread, many great minds have debated such a thing over the years and no answers have been found. Do you really expect to find it on the misc forum of hotukdeals?

I use the terms heaven and hell to communicate to someone else my feelings or opinions on things, theres no harm meant or offence ever taken - I don't use heaven and hell to further propogate any myths or anything like that.

Most people use the words heaven and hell at least a few times a week - if not daily.

I don't think people lie about their beliefs. Their beliefs are their beliefs end of story. None of my business either.

Liddle im not getting into a discusion about the merits of heaven and hell existing

this used to be a regular discusion when i was at uni, and while the debate was interesting it got to the stage were all involved decided it best to leave the topic alone so i will back out of this thread now as i think it is best to let people have their own opinions and they will have formed these for a reason be it a rational or 'irrational' reasoning
#23
I never know what to believe so i tend to just leave it as when something comes up like this i really need answers to my questions but know i wont and cant get the correct ones if that makes sense!!
I use the term heaven when people die and i will use it for my little one when she is old enough! For example - the pussy cat has gone to heaven! Gives them a little comfort i think rather than trying to explain that something has died!
#24
its always a interesting topic, but being a man of science I don't think there is a heaven and hell.

Hmm ... that is a clever piece of illogic hottoshop. It doesn't answer any questions, doesn't tackle any of the issues, just tries to paint non-believers as ... well, you said it. And a question for you: so organised religion and all it's myths and beliefs does no harm in this world..?

p.s. what does 'outwardly brave' mean?
#26
Yes I do, believe in both Heaven and Hell!

Naeem, I know you can probably answer this question, but Jesus does have a place in Muslim belief. isn't he considered to have been an earlier prophet? Not the true prophet of course, but a kind of precursor to Mohammed. Is that right?

I don't know. I not really interested in other religions. There is not much point if I am a Christian.

Well, historians know that he existed. The question is, was he actually the "Son of God"?

I suppose some have very strong beliefs, that they literally live their life besides.

When you have those of apothetic or conflicting beliefs discussing together alongside those of strong beliefs aswell it's bound to cause friction.

Simple human nature.
