Do we really need to know all the sordid details of someones sex life, the gory details of someones murder / imprisonment or the latest gossip on celebrities affairs?

Does it improve our lives in any way the fact that we are able to read / view the lives of people who have no immediate effect on our own lives or would we be better just not knowing about it?

Three examples, Wayne Rooney, Josef Fritzel and the woman who threw the cat in the bin.

Are we in anyway better off the fact that we know all about these stories day in day out even though they have absolutely nothing to do with us or is it 'promoting', 'advertising' (used in a loose term) and desensitising us to these type of stories making us more acceptable of them?

I can't make my mind up whether I would be better off only having news that directly affects me. Does all the bad news (which is the vast majority of newspapers and news programmes) lead to having a 'downer' on the world?

I love gossip because I am a woman.

I rarely know.........i see if it's something to do with a so called 'celeb' and either skip past it in the paper or just naturally switch off. lol

People laugh at me because i don't read newpapers or watch the news,so i don't know what's going on half the time, but i like it in my bubble X)
#7
I don't read newspapers or watch the news because it is so depressing.
I will read gossip magazines and the likes because they are more for the fashion and gossip.
I know how this sounds but I know bad things happen in the world, I just don't want to know about every last evil detail.
#8
This all leads back to when people lived in large groups and each others lives were connected. Now people who have few friends fill in the spaces in their lives by imagining that celebrities are their friends,
#9
I don't buy magazines either,i do read a paper,i just remembered, the local free one lol

Doesn't matter what you read or view though, I bet there is not one person in a million who doesn't know about the three article I said in the OP.

News these days is over sensationalised, just like it is in america, and sadly it is becoming more and more so

The only place I see it really is here in Misc!!

TBH I think it is a two-edged sword - as a teenager in the 60's, despite all the free love stuff etc etc, I was astonishingly ignorant of the seamier side of life. I didn't know all sorts of stuff. Talk about rose coloured glasses. I think I was unprepared for modern life and I think I, maybe, would have been a better mother in preparing my kids for life,if I had expected, at the least, bullying, swearing, violence, dangers and so on and not created a world where every one is nice to each other and are lovely and caring!

Now you cannot avoid finding out one way or another and we all expect the worst - maybe we are influenced to be worse ourselves as a result. I don't know.

Maybe there are now a lot of people that live their lives vicariously. Maybe we are more depressed and unduly influenced, becoming less concerned about others but there is much more e.g. community and world charitable action, I think, now than ever before.

I think on balance it is better to actually know the dreadful stuff, so that we can do more about it. The cult of celebrity is pretty uncivilised, the youtube generation shows us that it is a powerful draw - get on the screen even if you are tormenting kitten.

Sorry about the ramble - just typing out loud! Some thoughts; back later to see the views of others.

That's my point, if no one knew about these stories apart from those directly involved which would be very few do you think we would be better or worse off?

well lets take another story like jade goody's cancer, people would be worse off because lots of women got checked after hearing about it. Madeleine Mcanns story got parents being even more vigilent.

Reading stuff like this is depressing.

I get the idea of depressed women who hate their lives reading gossip mags so they can enjoy the vicarious thrill of the 'glamourous' life of celebrity. People also like to see those people suffering and falling down, because it makes them feel better about their own life.

And then they comfort eat and get massive backsides.

I'm not sure really, some things we just don't need to know about do we.......the cat in the bin one for example, that's not gonna matter in peoples lives is it

Certainly celebrity stuff doesn't interest me,i have no interest in who is doing what and with who.

Jade Goody's cancer was pathetic - voyeuristically watching a woman dying isn't my idea of fun.

It just shows how empty some people's lives are.

Well we all know that you're someone who is no respecter of people's privacy or feelings after your sick comment that you weren't banned long enough for.

But she had terminal cancer - even you must be able to work out how she would be doing.

She saved the lives of people who only get health checks when a reality star is dying?

I'd like to think women aren't that stupid.

I actually said I'd like to think they weren't.

And you can dress it up in any way you wish - it was voyeuristic, it was prurient and it was the worst demonstration of our tabloid/gossip culture since the Princess Di absurdity.

Maybe it's you that is being a bit slow but screening at that age wasn't a common thing and bought about change so it did make a difference.

I know you are just trolling for a bite and some people are giving it but it just shows your ignorance.

My point is that the 'she saved lives' schtick was an afterthought used to excuse the invasive coverage of a woman dying in a very public manner.

I can assure you that none of the tabloids, cable channels or gossip mags gave a damn about 'raising awareness' about cancer.
