I remember we had only 3 channels and it used to go off at about 12 midnight the good old days :)

How horrified these people must be when they find out that we only had 3 channels to choose from as well!!

I remember as a little kid I would get up really early to watch cartoons and sometimes I'd have to wait 5 minutes just looking at that damn clown and girl. I just wish I found it as easy to get up early now!

I just about remember the no tv after midnight era- they played the national anthem on bbc with the flag flapping away in the wind.

Then came ITV with programmes like James Whale, prisoner Cell Block H & the Hitman & Her!!

Good ol' days.

No phone, no 'net, no sky TV.

Yep- and sledgehammer, wcw wrestling & that thing where the dodgy bloke went into places where people work nights & just sat there watching what they did.

Early 90's i think- when I was a raver & coming in at silly hours of the night!!

There's several BBC 'Closedowns' on YouTube: Search results.

Direct links to some examples:
BBC1 1981
BBC2 1973

And some ITV regional ones, here.

I remember Pot Black Snooker in Black and White, Watch with Mother and Andy Pandy, Tony Hancock, I Love Lucy, The Lone Ranger and Sgt. Bilko all in B & W
I also remember the first time I actually took any notice of the news and world events and that was on the assasination of John F Kennedy, 1963.

And yes the National Anthem and having to stand up for it and watching the little white dot disappear in the middle of the screen when the TV was turned off, used to take ages !!

actually hated seeing that sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much - was so young did not understand why there wasn't any cartoons?! i used to sit there for so long watching that until programmes started...

But when it used to say this programme was filmed in colour??? my brother is 2 years younger than me and everytime they said it he thought it would be colour on our black and white TV lol-he was born 63 so it must have been around 67-8 when colour first started infiltrating...
Oh and the fights over what we watched as we had one set!!!

I have Freeview, but there is still nothing on that interests me, most of the time!

Aaaah, back in the gold old days when children had to go out and use their own imagination instead of sitting in front of the playstation!!!
I remember all thos awful progs they used to put on ITV when they started doing nights, used to watch Hammer House of Horrors - they were so bad they were good!!!
Remember staying up for Hitman and her cos my sis was on it, she got onstage to dance to Jason Donovan or something ... still makes me laugh now!!!

There were several versions of "Test Card F" (the one with the clown) and it was used on BBC1 until 1997, and BBC2 until 1998. :)

On freeview do this, its quite cool. It gets that pic.

Go to Channel 105
As soon as the text appears press Yellow
Change Channel (I normally change channel down to Teletext)
Change back to 105
As soon as the text appears press Green
The word Secret will appear in the top corner (where the clock normally appears)
A diagnostics screen and menu will then appear (from which you can change which region BBCi thinks you are in)
Once this page appears there are a few hidden options:

Press 3 3 5 8 2 Red Green Yellow Blue - wait for about 30 seconds and the BBC testcard will appear

or

Press 2 7 3 3 4 8 7 Red Green Yellow Blue - the credits for BBCi will appear.

Wonder what that girl in picture looks like now?
I hate clowns, they are so ugly and freaky. What kid would want that as a toy??
