I find it amazing that school teachers can't seem to get to work when there is some snow around.
Most other professions seem to manage it.

I think the reason schools close in snow conditions is more to do with the fact that they dont know whether the kids can get there safely and more importantly,if there is a chance of the weather deteriorating while kids are at school, can they get home?

not really about teachers not getting to work.

I used to work as a Caretaker at a School and we always had to get to work, many times i walked three miles through snow drifts down country lanes to get in and clear snow only to find that the teachers couldn't get in :x

Got about 6 inches of snow here in south east London and it's still going. I guess they just meant 6cm specifically in Heathrow, or that was posted much earlier this morning.

Agreed, though, it does seem somewhat pathetic that giant aeroplanes can't move through snow. I know it makes things slippy, but so does rain and rainfall doesn't seem to make things grind to a halt all the time. But here train and bus services are completely cancelled and people are being advised not to drive unless absolutely necessary...

it amazes me how other countries carry on regardless but our country comes to a standstill because of a bit of snow, i mean its not as if they didnt know is was coming, they could of gritted the roads again last night not one main road near me was cleared today
#18
Have been out playing on the country roads in my Subaru, heated seats and some drifting action, great way to start a Monday morning.

As for the pilots, they should get trained by the Pilot I had in Finland, he landed on an icy runway whilst snowing, in -16 temp with a windchill making it -26.
Funny that all the roads were open, but then again there is a much higher standard of driving over there, especially in inclement weather.

Yes, We've got a few inches of snow so were all doomed.

Leeds Bradford Airport is battling on just fine, highest airport in the country, our northern pilots must not be pussys like those southern ones!

Makes a change, normally the first sign of fog at LBA and your diverted to Manchester or Newcastle.

A sprinkle of snow and the country falls about, however in other countries like Switzerland life goes on and the trains still run and are still on time. Amazing what do they do differently to us!
#22
How late is it?
#23
We have no snow:x
#24
while I do agree to some points made, you can't really compare our country to ones like Switzerland who get heavy snow fall often. If the government spent silly amounts of money putting in place equipment, materials and manpower on the off chance we get some snow, everyone would soon moan.

but like I said, I do agree that it doesn't take much to bring things to a halt.

For a donkey that's embarrassing  :-D

Well i dont think DP finds it pathetic sitting in his lorry now waiting for the council in London to come and rescue him as he cant get up a road in his lorry, he has been waiting for 3 hours and could be a few more hours yet. There is alot more than 6cm where he is.

True but Switzerland does not spend silly money putting in place equipment, materials and manpower it just because they have snow and when it happens they know what they have to do to get around the problem, where here in England we get a little snow and the counrty goes into melt down and grinds to a stop.

I Live in West Wales, and luckily only a few snow flurries so far, but even so none of our main roads have been gritted ready - I lived in South West France for a while and Winter's there were very cold and lots and lots of snow but even though we lived in a little commune with only around 12 houses in the countryside, life went on as normal in the snow. All the main roads were ok, trains ran ok and all the shops and schools etc were open. There was also no Panic buying of bread, milk etc which we seem to do as soon as we hear the word Snow. Other Countries seem to have got it right and don't panic when the snow comes and life goes on as normal. What is it with this country that everything comes to a standstil!!! We have known this snow was coming since the end of last week, why haven't the gritters been out and the snow plough's ready, what do we pay our council tax for???
