Makes no odds, email addresses can be spoofed. Why would HMRC initiate contact with you via email though? Why would they have your email?

Shhh, don't poke holes in the flawed logic. I'm *this* close to convincing him he's won the El Gordo Spanish sweepstakes.

"Anyone know if i can trust this?"

Are you joking or what ?

NEVER ,NEVER ,NEVER trust anything like this , even if it does look genuine . For a start , have you ever given Revenue & Customs your email address ???

If you believe this sort of email , you may fall for the Bank ones too .
Always ,DELETE the emails ...............end of problem .

I got a one yesterday from a Bank , HSBC , I was overdrawn by over a grand .
I'm not overdrawn and I dont Bank at the HSBC . ................DELETED..........

I accidentally clicked on the link within the email but closed the window straight away. Will anything happen because of this?

Apart from an agonising, lingering death? Not sure.

HMRC send all emails from - gsi.gov.uk

If there is not gsi in the address it's not genuine.

The email address can easily be spoofed because the Reply To field in the email header can be populated with anything. So anybody with a method of creating an SMTP structure can populate the Reply To field with [email protected] and the recipient will see that the sender was "[email protected]", although replying to it may well result in a bounced email.

Hence, a genuine email address can be used but you can spot if it is spoofed by checking the email header and performing a check on the IP address. There are websites that can do this for you by copying and pasting the header.
