Hi All,

I was made redundant just before Christmas, but I have just found a new job that I start in a couple of weeks. Yay!

Anyway, its shift work which I havent done before. Four days on, four days off.

I was wondering if anyone else does this or has experience of it, good or bad?

Thanks!

I loved doing that shift but it really screwed up my family life. I was on 4 days dayshift and 4 days nightshift with 4 days off in between.

It meant you had loads of free time which was great but if you have commitments or kids then it's not a brilliant idea.

If I was still single then I'd definately consider it.

being nosey - what job will you be doing? I do shifts at the moment on a 6 week pattern but we dont do nights consecutively. I find it great cos it means I get loads of daytime hours at home and I manage to catch up on the following nights

I am in IT, System Support.

It looks like I will be doing 4 days on, 4 off and then 2 days and 2 nights.

I don't have kids, unless you class the other half as one, so I am hoping it won't be too bad. I guess I can put in for a transfer when one comes up if it doesn't suit.

Thanks! It did take me a while to pick myself back up... but I think it has for everyone.

I was made redundant at the worst possible time. Dec 15th. I was not paid for Xmas and because I was 3 months off being there for 2 years, I got no redundancy money. I am waiting to see if I can claim through the government, but I am not holding my breath!

To be honest, I was one of over a thousand and I have a partner and overdraft to help me. When you had time to think about it, I felt sorry for the people that had children etc.

I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason, so new year, new start :)

LoL ChrisUK!

My shifts will be slightly different. 6.45am-7pm or 7pm-7am! Not too sure why the day shift is longer. Guess I will find out more when I start.

Anyway, it’s shift work which I haven’t done before. Four days on, four days off.

I worked shifts in my job for 25 years and although it can take some getting used to changed patterns I really enjoyed having MORE time off than my friends. Plus it was time where you could shop etc without everyone shopping at the same time. The worst thing I found was changing to my current job which is days (8-4 or I could do 9-5) which I found very hard, starting at the same time every day, shopping was restricted, haircuts, car servicing etc. Took me 3 months to settle on working days!

Hi amanda,

I do shift work 4 on 4 off, 12 hours a day/night, im on my second night tonight lol

I do 4 days on then 4 days off then in 4 nights then off 4 days then start again. its great when you come off days as when you work say mon, tues, wed, thurs days your then off fri, sat, sun, mon then in tuesday night

PLUS when you work shifts you should get shift allowance which bumps our wages up by £3 an hour hehe

i do shift work and i hate it its not worth £27.000 a year to get out of bed at silly times of the day

I do shift work 4 night on and 4 nights off, this works out that I only work half a year yay!! and have been doing it for 2 years. It does get easier coping with night and day and you do get alot of time where you are off work when everyone else has to work lol. I work in IT Support and at first it was difficult coping with staying awake at night but as I said it does get easier. :-D:w00t::thumbsup:

I'm at work now!!!:w00t:

Did it for years.

Good Bits:
It means you work for less than half a year especially when you take holidays into account. ( 4 days hols gives you 12)
I found some part time work on my days off ( Agency ) very flexible especially if you need the money for extra's. It can be boring with friends/partners at work on your days off.
You get to shop when it it is quieter during the week.

Bad Bits:
You work when your friends/partners are off.
We worked Christmas and New Year. ( a 24/7 company )
As the shift rolls you work a few weekends in a row. A pain when weddings etc come around as you have to take holiday.

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone. I guess I will give it 3 months to see how it goes and if it doesn't work out try and transfer to a different team. I am a little worried about losing my weekends!
