Demonoid ban you if you don't have a good upload download ratio, so you have to upload more than you download basically, if you fail to do this then you AND the person who invited you can get banned.
So you have to be a fool to invite someone randomly with no idea if they will bother to upload as you'll then lose your account aswell.

oh...ok....didn't know this. I used to use piratebay but have stopped. Is this the same for IPtorrents?

I asked in this thread and so was asking for an invite

On torrent websites like Demonoid, you maintain a ratio of the amount you have download to the amount you have uploaded.

So, for example, if you have downloaded 5GB of data and uploaded 5GB too, your "ratio" would be 1.00 ... They are usually expressed as a decimal (not the usual format of 5:5 like you'd usually come across)

A low ratio indicates you are downloading more than you are uploading (known as "leeching"). This is frowned upon as you're not giving anything back to the torrent community.

Dcx is requesting proof that you have a good ratio on another torrent website before anyone invites you. On some torrent sites, if you were to be banned, the person who invited you may also be banned - hence the need for reassurance that you won't "leech", end up banned, and get the person who invited you banned too.

Edit: Whoops to late!

Ok...thank you for explaining that and I totally understand. I don't do lots of downloading but I appreciate that dcx_badass is worried about being banned. So what kind of stuff do i need to have for uploading...music on my laptop? I'm sorry...being totally thick but learning new stuff everyday. I want to download the odd song and the odd film.

You need a special program (such as uTorrent) to download from torrent sites like Demonoid. These torrent programs handle the downloading and uploading, you just leave them to do their job.

The whole time you are downloading a file, what you have downloaded so far is being uploaded to other people. This is how BitTorrent works.. lots of individuals sharing lots of bits of data.

You don't upload anything new, just the same thing that you've downloaded, so once you've finished downloading, just leave it going to upload the same amount.

that's fine then. I'm trying to wrack my brains as to what site I used a few years ago. I did that on there as I totally believe that if you use these sites, you should help the community out. I'm just sorry I can't give you the ratio from that site....age has affected my memory!! lol Thanks dcx_badass & oldmanhouse for taking the trouble to explain.

Erm...I have no guarantee, never used private trackers before. But I'm not a tw@, I almost always seed to at least 2X as long as its an "active" torrent. I wont leave something seeding if im the only leech (right word?) for example.
edit: It's getting late, peer not leech right?*

I have utorrent downloaded already. I was using piratebay on the advice of a friend but my anti-virus was warning me recently about it so I thought I would go for a company that is well known like demonoid.

fern37,

It's not worth the bother, you'll only end up running the risk of being prosecuted for damages in the event you start uploading material which is copyright protected, even if you're not aware that you're actually sharing.

Demonoid don't ban you no matter what your ratio is, other private sites will tho.

My ratio on demonoid is negative( but thats only cause of a tracking problem).

quote from their FAQ
"My ratio is getting too low, am I going to be banned?

The ratio system is purely statistical and somewhat inaccurate at times, especially for the members with shared or dynamic IP's. Besides what other users may think of you for not sharing, there is no punishment for having a low ratio"
