Please dont abuse.

I am just wondering if anyone here has poor hearing? Mine has never been the best but I have managed to live life normally, I have failed most hearing tests conducted on me when I was little and when I joined the Navy, Luckily I managed to pass the 2nd one Navy did which let me join, But when I left I failed it again.

I have noticed my hearing has been getting worse so booked a free test with boots today and he says I need to get the DR to refer me to hospital as my hearing is worse than a 60 yr olds :( I am only 26.

He says he isnt sure what route they will take, but now im scared I will either end up deaf before my kids grow up or that I will end up wearing a hearing aid and being abused by people where ever i go.

Does anyone know what they could do to avoid a hearing aid?

Why would people abuse you for wearing a hearing aid?

My son is four and wears them in both ears as a result of meningitis when he was 6 months old, although he is not completely deaf.

Wouldn't you rather be able to hear properly?

my hearing isnt the best i had gromits as a child and i get ear infections often and flying is a nightmare the pain is so bad. i also burst my ear drum when i was having my daughter.

I have to admit im not the best with self confidence so this would just play on my mind that people notice them and think there is more wrong with me

If your getting abused just turn the hearing aid down and you won't have to listen to them.

But seriously some of the aids they have out now are barely noticable. A friend of mine I used to go out with few years ago with an old style one and nobody bats an eyelid at it or acted any different towards him

Do you judge other people like this ? :? I would wait and see what the hospital says before worrying about something that may not happen.

A hearing aid is no different from wearing glasses and you don't see 4 eyes getting abuse for having them

you are an idiot its people like you that need a good slap for there ignorance.

 Causing riots I am :)

I will wait and see what the hospital advice me to do, Gutted that I may lose my hearing sooner than I thought, But maybe the good thing with a hearing aid is I can turn it off when my children start to argue!

Ta all for your help and advice x

I have some advice for you from a scuba diving lecture I went to recently where we had a talk from an ear specialist. I have narrow eustacian tubes, a common complaint, so was very interested in what he had to say on this subject because this gives problems with the draining of fluid from the inner ear causing discomfort and problems equalising pressure in diving and in your case flying. Apparently the feeling these days is that there is a better alternative to grommets particularly in children. It is a product called Otovent (about £10 over the counter from chemists) and it is like a small rubber balloon that you practice inflating with each nostrils. This regular exercise causes your eustacian tubes to widen thus improving the drainage. I would strongly recommend you give it a try and also to the many others who have this problem.

My right ear for hearing is not so good , I had an ear infection years ago and had a grommit fitted to drain the fluid . The grommit drops out but I was left with tinitus ever since .Dont think theres anything for this complaint , but I would have no objection to wearing an hearing aid if it helps .

I had problems and was sent for a hearing test which showed a dramatic loss at certain pitches. Being subjected to a loud explosion or working in a very noisy environment could have caused this as could it being hereditary. Please dont panic, but another possibility in my case was a brain tumour and I was sent for a brain scan to rule this out. It turned out fine and their conclusion was probably hereditary but I should eliminate worst case scenario if I were you.

I have always thought it could be hereditary as for as long as I can remember my grandad has worn a hearing aid. But I will still do everything the DR wants so he can rule anything out :)

Dont wait, seriously. Its only a tenner and you need to do it for a few weeks before you get any results. This specialist almost guaranteed 100% that it would dramatically improve the size of your eustacian tubes. The Otovent kit is a small plastic tube you attach a tiny balloon over then close one nostril and practice inflating the balloon with the other nostril. Check this out

Even IF you end up wearing a hearing aid, the modern ones are TINY, most likely no-one would even notice you wearing one

as long as you dont abuse what you have by blasting music into them, its all you can do

Dont let the possibility you might wear an aid in the future worry you, people will still love you the same.

Hi Beth,

The hearing in my right ear is very poor.

I had lots of test and they told me a nerve was probably not working properly.

I think it runs in my family to be honest.

I refused an hearing aid because I can cope with my left ear being ok.

It also has it's advantages that I can lie on my left ear to drown out the sound of my fella's snoring x x

we have bad hearing in our family and my mum needed hearing aids from her mid 40's and I suspect I will too as my hearing has never been good and it is getting worse. Don't worry if you do need aids, no one will know you are wearing them. They are tiny little things that go inside your ear these days. Plus if you feel self conscious you can grow your hair so that it covers your ears.
#32
Hearing aids can be discrete these days, especially if you have the money to get ones privately rather than the NHS. They are very good and will improve things - just go for the test and see what they say.

I'd also have a look at the Mary Hare website http://www.maryharehearingcentres.co.uk/?cID=hearingcare_specialised , they are a hearing charity and have offered a great service to my father who has a hearing aid. Have a look and see if they have a hearing centre near you and if so, just pop in and have a chat with them

I have great hearing but awful filtering if that makes sense I.e I can pick up sounds really accurately say on the street and know which direction its coming from and randomly how far it is, but put me in a club and have a girl chat me up and I cant hear a word she is saying but can hear other people.
