Does anyone here have experience of living in LA?

Hi all,

My job (music) is taking me to LA in 2009 and I'm thinking of relocating permenantly. Any tips, reccomendations, experiences good or bad? I know that I will not get a proper feel for the place until I am out there, but as I'm going alone the more info I have the better!

Thanks in advance!

But we did nothing, absolutely nothing that day, and I say:
What the hell am I doing drinking in L.A. at 26?
I got the fever for the flavour, the payback will be later, still I need a fix.
And the girls on the bus kept on laughing at us,
As we rode on the ten down to Venice again.

I recommend going to Hooters opposite Graumann's Chinese Theater and ogling the ladies :)
In fact just go to Hooters every day!

Hooters everyday sounds great! A friend of mine lives in Del Mar which is just up the coast (probably nearer San Francisco) and I have heard great things about the place. I'm a producer, composer & engineer in the business and am sick of the scene in the UK. Have a film soundtrack to write in 2009 but I can't give away anything about it I'm afraid (which probably makes me sound like an attention seeking little twit - You'll just have to take my word for it :) )

So no recomendations from ex-ex-pats? Should I start learning Spanish? Take up sunbathing lessons? Have my teeth whitened? :-P

Impressive. I would ask you to score my forthcoming film, but I should probably pass that responsibility on to my brother. Admittedly I still have no idea how to get the project off the ground

good luck mate! better LA than most places in america. thought people were friendly enough and helpful when i was there last.

LA is a big place - the suburbs are great - I personally love Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, we sailed to Montreal on the old Stephan Battory (Polish Ocean Lines) and crossed the US by greyhound bus, a bit scary at times!, we then went down to Santa Barbara which I fell in love with and stayed on the University Campus for the whole summer as the students had left.
I am sure you will have a brilliant time there and California and the West Coast is cleaner than the east coast.
my daughter is in the music indusrtry and looking for a deal - have a listen and see what you think, if you get a chance,

she writes all her own music and plays piano, very hard in this business though so the best of luck to you and your family

No, but i'd like too.

Glad to hear that the people are friendly, that's probably the most worrying thing! Is there any social faux pas that I should avoid that would be acceptable over here? Getting blind drunk and calling everyone my best mate is probably not the best idea I suppose :)

Bus sounds like a real PITA to be honest, I'm going by boat into NY then renting a car, having a month off to 'do America', then settling down. Have bookmarked your daughters page to have a listen to later :) Thanks for replying folks!

Haha! DLM I'm moving out their permanently to get happy and get away from this place, not bring it with me :P Plus I'm that much of a pain that for all this luck I have, the ex dumped my volatile musical self! :)

Really enjoyed 'Someday', definitely a standout track. The other two were a little mellow for my taste.
She's certainly got a lot of talent though

Has she sent a demo into Planet Sound for the infamous John Earls to review?

Very cool place but traffic is a nightmare. Depends which are you stay in but there are many cool places to hang out like clubs, bars (pubs to you and me), shops etc. But like I say traffic is horrible!! Remember this is the state the elected the Terminator as governor.

I actually stayed further north in Seattle but did spend some time in LA. One thing about moving there is getting a VISA which is no easy task. You have to have an extremely good reason for going otherwise you can forget it. Even with a job it is no guarantee.
