Are you looking to tackle a specific piece of malware or just general recommendations?

For those irritating pieces of malware that pretend to be genuine AV/anti-spyware calling themselves advanced anti-virus, antispyware 2008 etc. I'd highly recommend Malwarebytes Anti-malware (google mbam) as it seems to be able to remove this type of malware in one go whereas others cannot. I've seen this type of infection a lot recently and have been very grateful for this software working so well.

It's just a general scan that I am looking for rather than a particular problem. I just want to check that my anti virus has not missed anything which could develop into more a problem later.

Cheers for the help. Is SpyBot OK to run along with an anti virus programme? Or do you have to disable the anti virus programme first?

agreed on spybot  i would also recomend Ad-aware ...... personally i dont run any of these programs along side .... i simply keep them on the desk top and run them all once a week .... i leave my usual program running alone but thats only to stop everything slowing down to much  Ad-aware is also free and available from download.com

Go for three basic, free downloads.

Spybot

AdAware

CCleaner

All are thoroughly tested and recommended everywhere. Running them on a regular basis will help to keep your PC free of bugs and running smoothly.

But you must also have a regular anti-virus programme installed. AVG is excellent and free.

To get downloads for all or any of these, do a Google search.

Yes, although if you want to avoid issues it may be best not to have Spybot's constant running enabled. It's also worth checking through results as sometimes different anti-malware programs will flag components of each other.

If you're not doing so already, I'd highly recommend using FIrefox or Opera for browsing as I find IE is the single biggest cause of malware getting onto machines these days.

Thanks for the tips John, I am already using Firefox. It's much better than IE.

I work in IT... and clean up desktops and laptops almost everyday at work..and here is some advice from me.:gift:
Have some sort of Antivirus software installed its a must and make sure the Windows firewall is on.
I would avoid Norton or McAfee for any cost they sometimes do more bad then good.. (hate them)
They do take like half of your computer ressoures and memory.

AntiVir Personal - (free) basic real-time antivirus protection, fast does not take much of your computer memory
recommend specially for older pcs with windows 2000, XP works fine on Vista too.

AVG Free Edition- free real-time antivirus protection recommend on newer pcs with XP & Vista.

Spybot (free) - gives you protection to stop things before it gets into the PC
but you need to have it running all the time which slows down the PC;s start up and takes
some of the computer memory. If you have a clean PC then no need to have it running.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - If your PC is already infected or you feel like its slow then run Anti-Malware
and update then do a full search and clean it. Its slow but its effective, recommended. (run it once a month or so)

IE7Pro - If you use Internet Explorer as your main browser then have this addon installed and turn on adblock option.
Or use Firefox with Adblock addon (im a firefox fan)

Other tools which could be handy to have...

* SmitRem - Tool to remove Spyaxe, SpySheriff, PSGuard, WinHound, and other issues
* SmitFraudFix - Tool to remove most SmitFraud infections
* RogueRemover - tool to remove Rogue applications installed with SmitFraud
* HijackThis - Essential tool for finding spyware, virus, trojan, and other problems
* CCleaner - Free tool for removing temporary files, cookies, history, and cleaning up registry problems
