I live in England and need to post a small packet to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Can anyone tell me if I will have to pay extra or whether regular 1st / 2nd class Royal Mail is adequate?

SI Yes. It's not part of the UK.

NI however is part of the UK and there is no surcharge.

hi i work in a post office, and the simple way to work out the postage to any place in ireland is, if it has a postcode, (the same layout as uk, ie, BT12 3AB) then it is normal 1st or 2nd class post etc. if there is no postcode then that place in ireland will b classed as overseas europe postage rate., hope this helps, if still in any doubt use royal mail online postage rates guide.

If your post office charges extra for Northern Ireland then i'd report them to Royal Mail for fraud.

I think I would be ringing post office counters to complain!

You join to bump an almost 4 year old thread with that comment? Easy solution, don't use other postal services!

Davey369..... His point is valid, and why shouldn't he use other postal services when they're cheaper, better and, unlike Royal Mail, tracked? I normally use MyHermes for parcels under 1kg as they're 46p cheaper than sending with Royal Mail, with full tracking. I have to pass my postage costs on to buyers. On eBay, for low value items, 46p is often the difference between a sale and no sale. I've just been asked to send something to NI. MyHermes charge a lot more to send there, so I'll lose money by sending to NI with Royal Mail!

i have two small packets to send to Northern Ireland, my local post office (in a shop) tried to charge me nearly £10 for each. they told me it was international postage once traveled through the sea, what a rubbish. explained to them, NI comes under mainland U.K postage rate, they didn't believe me. I do ebay a lot, know postage more than those people. I rung the customer service, told me if they have post code, postage will be the same as mainland (also it says on their leaflet). then she gave me a number to ring to complain, so I did. I went back to the post office, told them, still didn't let me send my parcels for second class rate. So now I need to go to the main post office in the town tomorrow morning. waste of time.
