My insurance company has just given me the document reference number from my log book that I sent them and it doesnt match the copy that I received when i 1st bought the car (before it was sent it off by the seller)
Have the insurance company given me the wrong number?

Why would you send your insurance compay your log book?
You mean the V5 document?
this is yours and you should not give it to Anyone other than the DVLVA in the event you sell your car, or a motor trader if you sell it to them.
