A Chihuahua would be the smallest possible breed but its size isnt really something you should be basing your choice on. There are far more important factors to consider such as temperament.

great dane

I love Great Danes <3

I don't understand wanting a dog which is smaller than a cat and looks like a rat, but if that floats your boat then you might find this interesting: http://www.allsmalldogbreeds.com/http://www.allsmalldogbreeds.com/small-dog-breeds-a-to-z.html

You might want to check out your local dogs shelter as well. see if they have a dog wanting a new and loving home, when I went to have a look at the Dogs Trust recently there were quite a few smaller dogs which surprised me, I expected there to be more the bigger dogs but it all changes so quickly in those places it depends what dogs they have on the day.

thanks all. I am looking for a small dog mostly because i have spine problems and dont think i could handle a big dog, and also so my children will be able to walk it too rather than it walking them :) i have been to my local dogs home a few times but nothing yet but i will keep trying. thanks again.x

Just remember that a small dog may not be the best idea. Speaking from experience (breeders in the family and mother runs a dog sitting business) little dogs tend to have what I would call "little dog syndrom" and can infact pull your children around more than a slightly larger dog! On walks unless trained properly (not likely if your looking in dogs homes) they will usually want to explore and go up to every dog! A breed that I would recommend would be a cocker spaniel, great family dogs but of course its all up to you! Ignore me if you want lol

I so agree with this, little dogs can have big attitude and be snappy little blighters, Jack Russells fall into this category in my opinion, plus from experience I find they seem to need more walking than a bigger dog like a labrador before they finally wind down and get tired.
I did however meet the most wonderful Chihuahua at the dentists (random I know) and it was lovely and is taken to hospitals as a relaxation and comfort dog etc, I'd have taken that dog home in an instant - only little dog I can ever say I have felt that about.

How narrow minded to think a dog from a home wouldn't of had any training

Not narrow minded at all. Its a fact that they are there to be rehomed for a reason and the majority of reasons are because either they were too unruly for the owner to handle (lack of exp from the owner? not the dogs fault) or they have been dumped/abused etc in which case they tend to be far too scared to respond to any type of training.
Obviously there are dogs there to be rehomed for reasons such as the owner moving where the dog could have been trained but its rare.

Ive had plenty of experience of 'rehomed' dogs and my mother has helped in training a great deal of them - She trains and rehomes pat dogs.

So as a family you only had experience of little dogs yet recommended a cocker spaniel with never having kept one in the family

Oh dear you dont read properly do you! In my family there are THREE seperate breeders, one of which (my god parents) are cocker spaniel breeders. I have two cats and a cocker spaniel myself and my parents have one atm. Im 22 and at no point in my life have I not had a cocker spaniel as a family pet.

Jesus your thick! At no point did i say she has none so Ive got no idea where you got that from!
As already said part of her business is training dogs to be pat dogs and then rehoming them (not in her own home!) Understand now?
