Don't ever go with Tiscali BroadBand...

I have had nothing but trouble with them, They wont even supply the migration codes to help a ISP change...

I have been told that I use the 'unlimited' 512kb BroadBand too much...

I have been forwarded a great link that pretty-much sums up Tiscali's service...

Have a read of this... http://www.3dvelocity.com/articles/tiscali/broadband.htm >>The Great Tiscali Swindle<<

Thank you for saving me alot of trouble :D
My BT broadband's 12mth contract is nearly up, and I have been looking for a cheaper alternative. I was going to go with Tiscali, but I will avoid them now and stay where I am.
Thanks again.

Hello, and thanks for the warm welcome, Leonie.
I have had a little look around, there's so much here
I am new to all these freebie sites and have spent quite a few hours looking and ordering, no doubt my postie will be delivering me some goodies very soon! :D

Hmm... To think I used to be prepared to recommend Tiscali coz of their dial up service on PAYG, which was fine with free gifts incentives....

Now they've broken the law [so it looks by reading from your link above]by enticing customers with an uncapped incentive, offered the same service to lots of people at different prices + are manipulating the wording of contracts. Turning "uncapped" to "always on" in a few words. That has to be a trading standards infringement doesn't it?

Although I've had just over a week of NTL down time, up until yesterday. NTL have promised me a full month's refund as compensation for that.

I can't recommend NTL enough, although I know not every user is as happy with their experience of them. It's a pity NTL isn't available to everyone to at least give them a try out.

If you want to see if you can receive NTL: CLICK HERE

The only good thing about Tiscali now, is their website content [except the advert for their broadband].

Hope things improve for any of you using Tiscali.

Oh + welcome to HUKD from me too mothersmilk :)

There are a great bunch of people here that will provide you with loads of postie things lol.

Your postie will soon be exceeding his download limit to your letterbox!

:D

LOL, I hope he doesn't start charging me for his extra load!

This site is great! I have spent hours in here today and I still haven't got thru even half of it :)
We can't have NTL, I have already looked into it. If we lived 150yards down the road we could......go figure! It seems that I'm better off staying with BT for the time being.

I was on BT for a year and then I switched to Telewest. I'm not sure if it was the best choice or not to be honest. Telewest offered the higher 768 download speed but the upload is only 128mb and I can really tell the difference when using something like a webcam or uploading to ftp sites. I really do miss the higher BT upload speed, I think it was supposed to be 256mb but I was getting 512mb up.

Part of the reason I went to Telewest was to get the broadband/phone package cheaper but I also have lots of problems with international calls through Telewest. For example one day the lines were literally crossed where we had people calling from Canada! and when we tried to call Canada from here we ended up getting through to all sorts of random numbers! Bizarre? Another common occurrence is for the phone to connect through but it doesn't ring on my end but it does on the other end. This only seems to happen with international calls.

Thanks for your imput. It seems that BT are offering the best deal on the 512 speed, with 15 Gb download limit per month, for me at the moment. I will keep looking though, the prices are bound to get lower eventually. the deals out there seem to be aimed at dial up users, offering the free modem and set up etc, which I don't need. I'm just looking for a cheaper ISP.

I think most of the deals come with a free modem. What I did when I switched was I sold my old BT modem on eBay and got a good £35 for it! That was combined with first month free on Telewest and something like £20 back if you ordered online, so really it's a good 3 months for free :) I don't know what promos they are running now though but do remember that you can always pawn off the modem at eBay!

Thank you Paul. I have checked if Telewest is available in my area and it isn't. Could've been cheaper for me too, they are still doing the 3mth offer! never mind.
Did you have problems using other USB devices with your BT modem? We found that every time we tried to plug our digicam in, our broadband connection would "disappear". It was still really there, but didn't work. After alot of searching on forums about it, we decided to replace it with a router. Now we can plug any USB device in with no conflicts :D
I still have the BT modem, but there's loads of them on eBay at the mo, so won't put it for sale in there yet.

Yup I had the same problem. If I swapped it out it "killed" that port. Sometimes it would stop working and I had to plug it into a different USB port to have it recognized again. Weird. This was on a Mac OS X. Actually that was a good point of switching to Telewest is they gave me a proper modem with USB or normal ethernet connection. Using a router was a good idea on your part!

i would stick with bt at the moment
from thier website:
BT is increasing the standard speed of all of its BT Broadband and BT Yahoo! Broadband packages, at no additional cost to our customers. This will be for both new and existing customers

The aim of these changes is to give all of our BT Broadband and BT Yahoo! Broadband customers 2Mb broadband as standard (or the best speed available that their line will support), allowing them to have an even faster connection speed.

For BT Broadband Basic customers we will be increasing the speed of their broadband to 1Mb as standard (or the best speed available that their line will support).

£25 quid for 2mb is good value

BT impose usage limits tho dont they?
#16
It depends how much you're paying. £18 pm for 1GB allowance or £25 pm for 15GB, both at 512k.
Glad to hear they're increasing the speed tho. I think I'll def be staying with them for a while :P

NTL are good, for about 1 year i got free dial up and had no problems.

When i got broadband their engineer was friendly and when i found out that the ethernet port was faulty they came to replace it, again a friendly person.

I havent had any downtime either, the only thing that was a problem was my pc, not their fault. When i had really slow connection it was my pc loaded with crap, so i did a clean install and great speeds.

Their service is at a good price for what you get, and it is unlimited, they havent billed me wrong or anything like that either.

Their Digital TV is naf though, go with Sky.

Their waiting times on the phone is poor, i have been waiting for around 1hour to get through to somebody, and they weren't much of a help.

When its all up and running its good though. They are thinking about changing the 300kb to 1mb, but with a 5gb limit, so im hoping that i dont use all that, i have been monitoring my usage for a day but ill check when its a month.

Hi. I'm not with Tiscali, but if I were you I'd try and set up a free online petition about Tiscali providing a better service or that Tiscali stick with their tems of the contract or something. You'd need to advertise it somewhere where Tiscali mods won't delete it, and somebody can have the fun job of keepin Tiscali posted.
