Why S. Darko?

Because it's about his sister - Samantha Darko

I thought you meant 'why do a sequel' ?

They shouldn't have bothered - the first one was excellent and should have been left at that!

LOL... The link even said so!!

The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Hope it's good. Loved D Darko! I wonder if Frank will be in it!

Wow - they have taken a great, low key, surreal, dark movie, and made a sequel that looks like a bad episode of Heroes..............way to go...................

LOL..... Difficult to know where to begin!

It is a very dark film in the subject matter. Donnie Darko, should have died in the opening sequence when an engine jet landed on his bedroom. (From a plane that didnt exist!!!)

Dannie Darko is a bit of a schitzo - he was woken before that happened, by a giant rabbit called Frank, telling him to follow him, so he survived.

There is lots of humour in the film and some real classic stuff.

Basically its a present day time travel.

The above sounds weird and daft - and watching you may think the same, however, there is no doubt it will take you a while to work out what the hell the film is about. It did me anyway - but didnt spoil my enjoyment. I do however now understand most of what happens - including the bizarre ending.

As others have said in the thread... its one of their "best films"....... so whilst it has cult status, its a true classic from my perspective.

donnie darko is one of my all time favourite films, but i've had this one for a while and haven't watched it yet as all the reviews i've read have slated it.

One sequel they shouldn't have made imo

I heard that Kelly won't be directing this one or even having anything to do with it which is a shame. I might check it out but I don't hold high hopes, mostly because the first movie was SO unique and head-muddling! I watch it back and still am not sure what it all means.

Finally got round to watching it this evening.

Yes, weird as expected, and a couple of time roll backs. Can't say I got the gist of this one though. I mean, what the hell were the meteors about and the scratching? And how did it help the little boy? (And who did it! - My guess is the vicars missus!)

Thoughts?

I've only seen the first one and I must say, one of my fave movies, total classic:thumbsup:

As Rediron said, its worth a watch, but its not like the original even though its virtually a remake! (Yes I know that doesn't make sense - but it's different - but the same! - God this gets worse!)

Must say, I'm surprised that you'd like Donny Darko. Dunno why, didnt think it would be your cuppa tea!

Well I've just had a little read up on the plot..... and it makes a bit more sense now. (I ought to do the same for the original to see if I was right!)

lol, I'm still figuring the first one out, I think I get it, but I like watching it again anyway, any excuse!!

It is a good film, good is not the word I know, but it's late and my vocabulary as always on here is limited, hahaha:p

This should give it more sense.

It still leaves lots of unanswered questions, but its a good summary.

Love this summary from one viewer

A thought provoking masterpiece

Donnie Darko is a type of movie that provides any viewer a type of material that promotes hard thinking and even harder re-thinking. After the film ends, it's almost impossible to keep yourself from thinking of all the possible way to interpret such a film. It's not quite surreal or full of quirky nonsense, it's more like a set of events, which seem to make sense on one level, no sense on another level, and finally perfect sense on another level. The movie acts as an illusion to what's really going on, its almost pleasantly distracting.

Our main character, Donnie Darko, is a boy suffering from sleep walking, and now what appears to be delusions. He manages to avoid a certain death with the aid of a man in a bunny suit. This twisted bunny also informs Donnie that the world will come to an end within the month. This sparked curiosity and dread in Donnie, who also has every other aspect of a teenager's life to worry about. The film proceeds with the feel of a teen flick, the style of a horror, and a plot suited for a fantasy.

The end of the movie is the part which will make you want to watch it again. You'll think you've discovered what's really going on after the first time, prove yourself wrong on the second time, and will sit and watch every possible detail the third time. Richard Kelly has created an instant cult classic, and perhaps something more than that. Extremely well written with believable characters speaking believable dialogue.

I'll be the first to admit, this film is not for everyone. People will either love it, or despise it with all their heart. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and would recommend it to anyone who has a taste for dark humor and a desire to put the pieces of the puzzle together over and over, long after the film has ended. 10/10

The bit in blue is precisely why its a great movie IMHO

yeh, I think I got it when Frank's identity was revealed at the end, bit of a twist there, still a mad film and yes lots of unanswered questions and lots of ways of looking at it too, which makes it such a good film!!

The connection is someone dying and acting as a catalyst within to make events that wouldn't otherwise have happened, correct themselves. This is more obvious in the second film as there are a couple of correcting events before the final climax. But someone had to die for that to be the case and the appearances to become valid.

The more you try to explain sometimes, the more nonsensical it becomes! The sequel is far more baffling though, since some of the things within must still pan out, which frankly (no pun intended) are absurd.

It begs the question (as it does in the sequel), why not just let things pan out like they were meant to be - but hey, the film would have been incredibly short and boring!

One of the rare films you have to see more than once:thumbsup:

Amen to that.

Edit...... Hands up who's going to watch Donny Darko again (or for the first time) tomorrow!

just had to pop in here and add another +1 to the 'one of my favourite films ever' quota.

The Directors Cut however....the less said about that the better. Makes me think that Kelly fluked the first cut, and is actually an awful director. Especially looking at Southland Tales...
