Yes he said I can pay once he finishes our drive.

that'll be our Romany/Gypsie/Traveller friends then, did they have a dag with them ? the cheaper alternative would be to put half the money in the middle of the drive & set fire to it, thus saving yourself £225.

Yes it was a traveller, i dont mind that, i just want to know if this is a NO or YES deal.

yeah most gippos do driveways they wont dig down deep enough, use enough tarmac, proper drainage etc so at first it will look good but then you will get owned later on when it starts sinking etc.
#7
sounds cheap, ask him how thick he plans on laying it and what hes laying it on top of?
if he is just putting a thin layer on the top of existing ground it wont last very long.

Yes this is what im thinking too, if it lasts 5 years id be happy as getting an extention built onto the house so the drive would be re done then.

^ This, they'll most likely lay a couple of inches over your existing drive leading to future woes. Buy some lucky heather and tell him to jog on.

they had a similar type feature on rogue traders a while back not sure if it was gippos they were 'spying' on but it was cheap jobs done shoddily. Is the drive in desperate need of work? Or were you just thinking about it cos it seemed to be a good price, why not put the £450 quid towards your extension fund lol

It will be a bodge job. I fell for the scam 20 years ago ("we have some gear leftover from a big job!")

The promise was that it would be dug down and a 4" later would be laid. I got my Dad to be at my house.... and he turned up a couple of times, but drove off when he realised someone was there. He finally got there when no one was around and just laid over existing. Cracks and weeds were through in no time.

Seriously, it will be a bodge job and when it is, I'd advise not to withhold the money. (if ya know wut I mean brov.)

5 Years ! I'd be surprised it would last 5 months ! It would be a no from me, all they will do is lay the tarmac straight onto the dirt after levelling it off, I'd be very surprised for £450 you will get a proper job.

haha, well we need the drive doing really its shoddy as it is so they couldnt do a worse job! could they? lol

he said he would include the timber for free to whatever he wants to use this for aligning the edges or something or other.

does anyone know how much a proper job should cost?

If it will be redone when the extension is built..why do it twice? If you've lived with it for this long can't it wait a bit longer?

Yer he was very pushy. rang doorbell about 7 times, asked me a further 6 times if i want him to come round and do it... then i said give us a card and he said oh no dont worry ill come back tomorrow as im in the area anyway!

Thanks for the advice. i will leave it, I cant be bothered with hassle from travellers to be honest, and i dont fancy wasting £450 on shoddyness, I new it couldnt be done proper for 450 but i wanted to ask you guys here, as HUKD folk are always helpful.

thanks again.

Sam.

i suggest you block the drive with a car or van as if drives empty theyll do it anyway and send the boys round if you dont pay them .im being deadly serious btw!

It will be a bodge job,it will cost you more to put it right than it would cost to pay a reputable firm to to a decent job in the frost place.

Also you don't need some gypo sniffing around your property generally for obvious reasons
#22
Deffo don't get it done. House around the corner had it done maybe 2 months ago. They own to semis next toeach other so it was a double front to do. It looked a right state to start with. They took all the weeds out etc. Parked their huge van on the footpath and made a right mess everwhere. Tools all over the pavement / road etc. Put the thinest layer on top (not sure how much they paid) It is now all sunk in from car going on it, and there are so many weeds growing through it. Home owners got a hefty fine as the council had to come and lcear up ALL the mess.

Looks a right state!

Also... next door neighbour had it done by an irish man (working in the area) was falling apart in big chunks after a few months and he charged her a fortune!
#23
Don't be surprised if they do it anyway now and demand payment for it...
#24
next door had theres done its sinking alredy
#never buy from irsh at the door there all con men
father inlaw had them do gutting he then pay some one to do the job so it didnt fll down again so i not so cheap after all
#25
tradesmen who are good at what they do,dont need to be knocking on doors touting for business.

hm i would have said true a while ago but some of my o/hs who are very good at their jobs are struggling...mainly cos people are charging lower prices..often prices which mean they dont earn minimum wage IF they do the job right..

You'd be a total tool to accept their offer. I wouldn't have any gypo/ paddy who knocks at my door to do any work for me. Have you ever watched Rogue Traders? There's your answer.

Don't even say you'll think about it as one day you'll come home and they will have thrown down 10mm of sticky stuff then expect £2k due to 'unexpected' faults and problems found when digging 12ft down.

BIG TIP DON'T EVEN LET THEM IN YOUR HOUSE, even to use the loo. Tell them you have a reputable company coming round instead.

I did this when we had one come round, he threatened to come round every day and bring the Police as every reputable company in the area were 'Cowboys' according to him!!!
He tried again earlier this year - I just told them that we have no money - lost my job.

That seemed to work, no hassle.

I say get it done, and tell the story on HUKD in a few weeks time.

LOL... that's actually pretty funny!

Wow.... where did WotWot123's post (again!)

Wow.... where did WotWot123's post (again!) (See - I can be a parrot too!)

Actually this is pretty amusing being posted now. My next door neighbours are getting their drive done right at this moment. OK, its block paving, not tarmac, but I can already see its going to be a bodge job. Where the drive ends, its only 1.5" below that level. Hmmm... Im sure blocks are bigger than that! That'll teach them to get work done while they are away... Amusingly, they were there yesterday for 30 minutes before leaving. They seem to have dug, then filled with more of the same soil and stone mixture they took out.

And yes, I could hear them talking... and they definitely spoke Chav.

They dont have armies. They just turn up when you're out or in the middle of the night. Do go thinking there is anything brave about them

Makes me laugh that people even consider having a total stranger who's knocked on the door do any work for them, no wonder fly by night people stay in business

got some trees felled by some guy who knocked on the door other day for 100 quid... not bad for how many he had to fell.... tree surgeon quoted 400 >

haha, its a gamble isnt it! like everything... but i knew having a gypsie do this work would be bad, so i opted just for a second opinion on here, but i wont bother now...

but we really do want it doing.

Remember when my mum had it done many years ago. Was an absolute bodge job. My dad came back from work when they started and went mad. Obviously as they started they were going to finish and threatened my dad as he told them to do one. Needless to say, the drive looked awful

OHH FFS you and OP there is quite a difference between an Irish man and travelling gypsy tarmacer. How **** ing ignorant.

Trust neither though, they will stroke you :p

You know those couple of sayings, don't trust a stranger, and if its too good to be true.

But please try not to confuse an Irish citizen with a member of the travelling community

Edited By: sparkyIreland on Aug 14, 2010 20:09: you left the ing out of the ****
