I'm pretty fed up with my job and am thinking of becoming a driving instructor, has anyone trained for this, or already is one?, any advice/tips on the best place to go to (there seem so many) how long it takes cost etc would be much appreciated.

I am a qualified Driving Instructor..........not sure of the costs nowdays as it's been a while but if you are going to work at the same time then it will take 12-18 months.

As for recommending it................no. There are so many about nowdays that you'll struggle to earn a great living.

I gave it up.....do the odd bit now and again but i don't miss it in the slightest. :)

It costs about £4000 nowadays, a piece of advice do NOT use the Instructor College - think they calling themselves red now. My friend went with them - could never get anytime to see them as they so busy and were really not supportive.

You may be best paying an instructor locally who can help you, for the theory part you can buy the training materials yourselves

A friend became an instructor about 10 years ago. He started with BSM I think, then after a few years went it alone. He works all hours but he loves it. Good luck to you if you decide on going for it. I would but I just don't have the patience for it.

That company on the telly, Red I think they're called make it sound like we can ALL earn 30 grand a year! As you say there already seems like a glut of instructors everywhere.

thats never stopped any of my driving instructors.....and there have been many:whistling::giggle:

Exactly! There's loads of carp ones out there, but finding a goodun - its like finding a bloke thats willing to spend over a quid on a date and not be expecting "something more" (lol - just been readinggerbil's date thread :-D)

do NOT use RED - they just spend all their money advertising to get people to part with their cash (which by the way is a rip off as they give you next to no training!)

Thanks for all the info, can you really go it alone and train yourself?

yes you can - the theory can be done by yourself with no training (just books). For the practical tests (of which I believe there is 2 - one a driving and one an instructing) you may want some tuition, but you can pay for that if and when you need it. My friend struggled on the theory so never got past that as its quite hard. These instructor schools are such a rip off and trainee driving instructors think they have to use one but you dont

People always want to learn to drive, although its very competitive unless you get in with BSM or similar

I agree your better off buying the books and putting your mind to it without paying £4000 odd for "training." Most of the companies are just there to take your cash. And yes red will "give you a job" but what that actually means is theyll charge you 4 times the cost of leasing a corsa!

I do MHE training (forklifts etc) at the moment and did go to the famed "instructor college" for an "assessment day" they assesed me and decided i was good enough to extract a small fortune from for "training" but i knew right away what they were up to and decided that even if I didnt fork out for this I couldnt really earn that much at £20 per hour less fuel/insurance/car etc.

hiya, your welcome. My friend was doing it but he gave it up as he found instructor college useless and he could not afford to pay an instructor to help. You can get some info on any of the driver schools sites, they usually invite you for an interview etc if you fo down that route.

This govt website is quite a useful starting point http://transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/drivertrainers/becomingadrivinginstructor/introductiontobecomingadrivinginstructor.htm

Heres another site:
