Christian Aid is responding to the disaster in Haiti with emergency aid. But we need to help Haiti in the long-term as well as the short-term.

We are now calling on the UK to lead the world in giving Haiti a fighting chance for the future by cancelling its $890m of international debt.

Sign our petition and we will present your call to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling.

UK has already cancelled its debt to Haiti

As if God could achieve what Bono couldn't?

why not make them pay their debts so the money could help our soldiers go into care homes without having to sell their homes and kick out their wives and families .as we could then afford to help them more .this is just an example of how our money could help our own country i'm sure theres lots of other charities in the uk crying out for help

Sorry, giving them money for charity is one thing.. taking them out of debt is another..

At least this Haiti thread is in the right forumz. That's all I care about.

Its very sad what happened, but no matter what seems to get plowed in things never change, these same countrys have been getting help since i was born, yet there still no better off. This debt was there before so im not sure why it should be wiped, the millions being poured in should be enough to put this country to a better state than it was originally, surely

If you was not so ignorant like a few other people on this thread.
Then you would know that France was the country that caused Haiti's debt, not Haiti itself.
France pretty much stole what would be around £13 Billion during the slave period

A nice sentiment OP, but there are far too many people who don't like to help other people if they themselves aren't happy with their own life.

Personally, I think anything we can do to help a country in such dire straits is a good thing.

But a lot of embittered people will say why bother, when their own finances and lives are so bad.

The chancellor will have budgeted any repayments into his books if they owe us any money ? Though I'm sure it's mostly the US that have lent them the money.

so what did the British do for the past 100's of years?

Are you doing to be man/woman enough to give all that you have back to the people who need it?

guv, did you stop to think before you posted that comment?
i'm supportive of listening to both sides of any debate but seriously dude, if you don't think this is a worthwhile cause then why not just ignore it and move on instead of posting a trolling comment?

It was quite serious.

This country is in a recession. I can sympathise with the plight and need for aid. I just fail to see this as a reason to wipe out the debt. Assisting to rebuild is one thing and fine. I dont agree with both. You are obviously free to disagree.

It was not a "wee" quake. If you know anything about earthquakes then you would know how bad a quake it was.

And Haiti shouldn't have had the debt in the first place, due to France as i previously posted

throwing millions upon millions of pounds to put a country back to its original state, when original state is not good, seems pointless, so i do think they need help to put it into a better state otherwise the already millions upon millions spent have been spent on ............................. i cant think of the right wording for the ending
#26
We won't need to wipe out their debt as half of them will be over here on a freebie I dare say.

For those interested in seeing where all their debts came from and who actually received the loans (not the people, thats for sure!):-

http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Caribbean/Haiti_Enslaved_Debt.html

It might help some people remove their blinkers. Haiti will be a poor country FOREVER without their debt being at least partially cleared. It would be cheaper to wipe it then keep taking back with one hand and giving with the other.

i.e charities and international development aid gets given by the world's citizens only to be swallowed up by debt repayments to the world banks!

I think you worded it very well  If they are given debt relief other countries will expect similar treatment and all it would mean is that more money is available for tinpot dictators and for their armies. .....

to be fair, I think you'll find Haitis debt to the UK is tiny. The recent laptop giveaway to kids in poverty would have cost a lot more.

To put it in perspective, IT projects alone under Labour wasted £26,000,000,000 (£26BN)! :w00t:

LOL - Just found out that the UK cancelled all Haiti's debt LAST YEAR!

So this bickering is pointless!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/19/haiti-debts-uk-taiwan-venezuela

Britain was one of the first members of the Paris Club to cancel all the debts , and it has now urged Venezuela and Taiwan, which are outside the Paris Club, to provide full debt cancellation for Haiti.

Good sensible post  Problem is that if the debt is cleared whats to stop exactly the same thing happening again ie misappropriation of money, corruption etc If they have no debt they are free to borrow more and there is no gaurantee that the money borrowed will be used wisely.

No - it's the people who work for a living that owe you something apparently.

From the links I've read was that.. Haiti wanted more freedom in exchange for debt (which they cant handle)..

Sorry if im being blunt but isnt slavery (if that was REALLY what it was) ever so slightly better than people simply dying of illness, poverty etc etc?

Safeguards on future borrowing should be put in place. I'm surprised the World Bank doesnt do this already with lending. Then again, all they're concerned with is interest forever. Its one of the most corrupt organisations in the world imo (run by the Elite for the Elite!).
