The average user of krokodil, a dirty cousin of morphine that is spreading like a virus among Russian youth, does not live longer than two or three years, and the few who manage to quit usually come away disfigured.
...

The active component is codeine, a widely sold over-the-counter painkiller that is not toxic on its own. But to produce krokodil, whose medical name is desomorphine, addicts mix it with ingredients including gasoline, paint thinner, hydrochloric acid, iodine and red phosphorous, which they scrape from the striking pads on matchboxes. In 2010, between a few hundred thousand and a million people, according to various official estimates, were injecting the resulting substance into their veins in Russia, so far the only country in the world to see the drug grow into an epidemic.
...
The "rotting" explains the drug's nickname. At the injection site, which can be anywhere from the feet to the forehead, the addict's skin becomes greenish and scaly, like a crocodile's, as blood vessels burst and the surrounding tissue dies. Gangrene and amputations are a common result, while porous bone tissue, especially in the lower jaw, often starts to dissipate, eaten up by the drug's acidity.

its very real, view the video for confirmation.

Russia has the highest population of heroin addicts and an increase in price shifted them onto this evil substance. Almost like human zombies.

Someone please hurry up and invent a real ray gun.

The bottom right picture is the English girl isn't it,the one where the mother released the pics to frighten other druggies. Her death was then investigated as a possible murder rath than overdose

The video is pretty gruesome - never seen/heard of drug effects that extreme.

Wish I hadn't watched that before I go to bed..
Woman in the first video is rather calm considering her arm is now a bone!!

Silly, silly people.. Russia has big problems though - people in poverty there really do live in poverty.

Stupidly I didn't realise it had the highest amount of heroin addicts in the world. Considering it's size it should have been a no brainer but for some reason I never associated drug taking with Russia.

I wonder if drug abuse was so high during the Soviet era?

For the love of God!

I live in a plastics & orthopaedics unit in hospital, this although gruesome is not unseen in this country. This happens to the elderly who are not cared for correctly and it's a travesty.

I agree with the natural selection comment. Just don't do drugs, nature doesn't have needles.

There's a difference between 'unable to care for yourself' gangrene and self inflicted gangrene. The day this drug hits the UK will be a very sad day.

That must be pretty awkward when you try to bring someone back for drinks.

Why there isnt a death penalty for dealers of the "death sentence" drugs I don't know.
