16000 cigs or unlimited if you go via gatwick as I go on holiday about 4-5 times a year and havent seen any customs there for over 5 years!

I always take an empty suitcase and fill it up as the savings in cigs more than pays for holiday :)

Oh brill thanks ever so much, loads more than i thought!!! I just need to find a site with average amsterdam prices of cigarettes, meals out etc now, so i can save some good spending money :D

latvia is the cheapest at 70p a pack as opposed to £5.30 over here! No wonder 50% of the cigs now smoked in this country are duty frees!

Sorry but I meant 3200 cigs per person:-

Duty Free Allowance / Tax Free Allowance

    http://www.heathrow-airport-guide.co.uk/template/images/spacer.gif

When travelling from the EU* to the UK you do not have to pay any tax or duty on goods you have bought in another EU country as long as tax was included in the price when you purchased the items, the items are for your own use, and have been transported to the UK by you. This includes gifts, but does not include any item that is intended to be used as payment or to be resold.

If you bring back large quantities of alcohol or tobacco, a Customs Officer is more likely to ask about the purposes for which you hold the goods. This will most likely be the case if you appear at the airport with more than:

3200 cigarettes

400 cigarillos

200 cigars

3 kg of smoking tobacco

110 litres of beer

10 litres of spirits

90 litres of wine

20 litres of fortified wine i.e.: port or sherry
Please note the following exceptions stand for these EU countries:

From Czech Republic - 200 cigarettes or 250g of smoking tobacco or 50 cigars or 100 cigarillos
From Estonia - 200 cigarettes or 250g of smoking tobacco*
From Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia or Slovenia - 200 cigarettes*

*No limit of on other tobacco products as long as they are for your own use.

    * The EU countries currently include: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus (Greek part), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Irish Republic, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (but not the Canary Islands), Sweden and the United Kingdom (but not the Channel Islands).

When travelling from outside the EU to the UK you are allowed to bring in the following, provided you travel with the items and do not intend to sell them.

200 cigarettes; or 100 cigarillos; or 50 cigars; or 250 gms of tobacco

2 litres of still table wine

1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22% volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs

60cc/ml of perfume

250cc/ml of toilet water

£145 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs
The thing to remember is this is a guideline only NOT a limit. You can bring as many back as you like as long as you can prove there for yourself. How you prove that stood in customs is beyond me but there you go.

just open all the packets and take all the seals off. if they are for you..
    amcol
Yeah they will be for me and my hubby, but my mate will be bringing some back for her mum im guessing as well but then she can use her allowance up lol

10,000 is pushing it I reckon. i always stick to about 20 x 200 per person max.

Cyprus cost = £15 for B&H so i spend about £600 saving over £1500 in tax per trip!

more than pays for a good holiday.

I'm pretty certain you can bring such things back for others too so long as you are not charging!! I know someone who got stopped with a transit full of booze, but he'd been wise enough to take the booking confirmation of the community centre he had booked for his daughters wedding reception so as he was not charging for the stuff he was fine.

You'll have a great time in Amsterdam. I'd recommend a guidebook from one of these:-

Could anyone tell me what the duty free allowances are if I travel from the UK to Amsterdam please? I don't see Holland listed above in the list of countries which are classed as in the EU. Confused I will be!!!

Holland is in the EU, so no duty free allowance.

By that logic I "save" £2,100 every time I go on holiday, as I don't smoke ;)

Also worth baring in mind if you ever travel there, that even though Gibraltar is Britsh Teritory, it doesn't count as "within the EU" for Customs purposes, so the 200 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits over 22% limit applies. (Which is probably just as well, as 200 cigarettes are £10, and a litre of Jim Beam is £6).
