DVD backups... NEW QUESTION ABOUT SHRINKING FILE SIZE & MAKING BACKUP DISCS

UPDATE: I've now ripped my new DVD's using DVD Decrypter, but they are pretty big files so I'll soon run out of storage!

I'd like to do two things

(1) shrink them for easier storage but not sure how TO go about this (the rip consists of loads of separate VOB and IFO and BUP files)

(2) burn the videos onto my own backup discs - what are the options here, in either the present format or with a shunken versions?

Sorry for all the technonoob questions.... completely new to this!

Free ripping software

DVD-Decripter

You may need these if the DVD has got ARccOS protection, but Ripit4me is no longer supported so does not always work on newer releases especially Sony ones which are the ones that use this form of protection most

Guide

Ripit4me

FixVTS

Edit

If you decide to use DVDfab (or AnyDVD) you will not need these, this is just a way to rip using freeware

barneydog - you are a hero. Thanks!

Links to DVD-Decripter downloads e.g. http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/ give me a warning that downloading will damage my computer, a warning I usually don't get. What do you think??

If you can find them I'd recommend DVD Decrypter to rip protected DVDs.
If you want to reduce the file size I'd recommend using DVD shrink.

The DVD Decrypter looks fine to me, I've just downloaded it with no problems

yeah. I use

DVD Decrypter (removes copy protection). Also DVDShrink works in tandem with the decrypter to make backup copies straight to DVD files on HDD or straight to DVD.

Thanks again for the help you've already given me guys, but here is Techonoob's next question.

I've now ripped my new DVD's using DVD Decrypter, and they play great on the computer. But they are pretty big files!

DVD±R can be bought for pennies these days (10-20p something like that depending on brand / dye / quality), burn and forget - I'm forever running out of space on my hard drive.

All the info you need is available on Afterdawn, a site I linked to earlier in the thread

As you have ripped them to HDD with DVDDecryptor you will need other software to compress them to a single layer DVDR. If you want to put them on Dual layer disc just burn them as DVDs.

To compress them

I use Nero Recode which is part of the full Nero suite. with this you can remove unwanted stuff such as extras or foriegn audio and subtitles.

If you don't have this you can use DVD Shrink which is freeware and burning software, there is an easy guide here

DVD Shrink is available here

Yeah, probably better than spending $ on extra storage. Thanks.
