you can pay for them from place like waterstones but i believe there is a site called guttenberg (sp) where you can get some for free.

Mate has a Sony 600 ( i think) it looks very good.

He has just bought 15,000 books off ebay for £15

The books have to be bought. If you look on sites like waterstones i think they give you a price. Generally i think they are quite expensive. There may be a few of the old classic type you can get for free but if he likes the sort of books off the shelves of wh smith and waterstones he would definitely have to pay. The other downside is i dont think there is a way of then passing it on to a friend which older people quite often like to do.
As an example i went on to waterstones site...dan brown's the lost symbol is 13.59 in ebook and 11.39 hardbook.
I have thought of ebooks for a while but at the moment i can pick most top sellers up at supermarket for about £4 so i am sticking to the paper version for now.
I will watch this thread in case someone as better info than me.
Just be careful not to confuse audio with ebooks, sounds obvious i know but it confused me to start with.

Hi Greg could you ask him if they are modern books or the old classics. I know you can get old stuff free. I think it is something to do with the copywrite ending or something. Either that or they are dodgy no disrespect to your friend but OP's father in law may not want to go down that route. I would be very interested in this myself as well.

Have a look on ebay there are loads selling huge amounts.

I don't think they actually list the books (probably for obvious reasons) but say there is a good spread across all genres of books.

They even got 4000 'Dummies' books, which i didn't realise there were that many.

tbh, might as well torrent all the books. Just as illegal as that auction I expect except its free

It's the same as with any other digital media - You can pay for it and get it legit, or you can get it for free via 'other methods'.

actually, looks like they are all legit as very old books.

books that are over 100 years old i believe are out of copyright so they are free

dont pay for them if people are selling them on ebay lol

not quite.

copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years

Yes i agree all the ones on ebay are old ones....which is fine if you like them but if your wanting modern books you will have to pay. Even if you could get them on ebay which all seem to be old ones would you want to read half the book and then find a fault with it because its an illegal copy. It would drive me up the wall.

I would imagine in the next few years ebooks will come down in price but until then i am afraid i am sticking to paper format even if i feel a bit guilty about rain forests.
