"Earthing" Myself

OK, am about to open up my sons laptop to check out the RAM and what I need to buy to make it run bit faster. It only has 256Mb Ram, and would like minimum of 512Mb but pref 1GB. (on XP)

BUT a couple of questions before I embark on this:

1) Is there any other way of me finding out what RAM is compatible without opening it up

2) When i do open it up (obviously will need to do this to install any new RAM purchased) I don't have an earthing wrist strap thing. What do i need to do, to ensure I don't blow any of the bits inside???

Ta!

thats how to find out how much ram you have on Vista.
as for earthing yourself. i wouldnt worry too much but best if u just keep part of your arm on the side of the case. this effectively earths you.

turn the power off at the mains, but keep the mains wire connected to the laptop. this will earth the laptop. before you touch the ram, touch a metal part of the laptop to earth yourself.

If you leave the power lead connected to the laptop, and plugged in at the wall BUT with the main power switch off, that'll be you earthed

To find out what RAM you need go to the Kingston memory website (www.kingston.com) and type in details of the laptop.
I would advise only buying QUALITY memory, like Kingston or Crucial...I have had untold problems with other brands over the years.
With regards to earthing yourself, simply touch something that is earthed at regular periods (evey 10 mins or so) such as a radiator or metal sink or whatever. Try to avoid walking about, especially on nylon carpets, as this is a good way to build up static.
Try to handle the memory by the edges only and only remove from the packet just before fitting. Try not to touch any of the contacts on the laptop.
Are you one of these people that tends to get zapped when touching door handles etc? If not, don't worry unduly.

1GB Stick. Will work, have looked at crucial's mem checker for you.

You want DDR2 PC5300 200 pin SODIMM.

Errr...most laptops don't have an earthed power supply (Mine doesn't)!
Also, it won't stop static damage from someone that is charged up!!
The idea is that the person fitting the RAM is fully discharged in which case earthing the laptop will not make the slightest bit of difference..the person needs to touch something that is earthed in order to remove the static.

That's what I do on my desktop pc but surely this won't work on a laptop powered by an external power supply.

should be ok as a back up, pretty sure the cable will still be earthed and you can also touch some metal on the frame to be sure. TBH when i changed the ram in my laptop i didnt bother. I have a wrist strap for my work anyway though
