Ebay Dilemma

Sold a hard drive to someone on Ebay. It was working 100% and well packaged. Upon receiving it the guy claims its not working. He hasnt requested a refund, but has instead asked me to "forward proof of postage" so he can deal with Royal Mail.

Question is - Is it a good idead to forward it. I will then be left with no proof i had posted it to him in the 1st place.

Why on earth would you take it upon yourself to claim via RM? Sounds dodgy, why wouldn't he just ask for a refund

he's probably going to claim via paypal where you will then have no proof of postage so he will win, and then try claim money for damage during transit/non received goods depending on how you sent the item, so will be trying to get double the money

don't. why on earth did he need the proof of postage for to prove your item is working or not. it's not like he didn't received the item, even then, it's not his job to sort it out with RM.

Should i just ask him to return the item?

If the item is indeed not working on return. Will i be able to claim compensation from Royal Mail? There is no physical damage, only internal (Hard drive is unreadable)

Alll he needs is the tracking number which he has on his parcel anyway?

agree with Elves, he shouldnt be having any dealings whatsoever with Royal Mail.

I dont see a reason why he needs it unless he wants to make a claim that he didnt receive the goods in which case you wont have proof? Dont send it

Royal Mail would want the original copy proof of postage, don't forward anything.

Offer a refund once / if they return the item but remind them that it will be at their own cost and advise them you will test the hard drive. Ask them for more details - have they installed it correctly, tested it on multiple machines, ask them for photo / videos which illustrate a fault. If they say 'they don't know', keep pressing them because if there is no physical damage, it could be a fault caused by them.

If you packaged the item correctly (eg. a bubble envelope would not be appropriate for a hdd), I wouldn't worry too much.

keep all communication through ebay, so you have a record should he want to file a claim, don't ask for him to return it, ask him why he needs the royal mail proof of postage (of course, don't send him anything) from you and ask him about the fault, like i mentioned in my previous post

be direct but polite, the more information you can get the better

I had done that and tested before it was sent. Ive asked him to do it again anyway and failing that he will have to return at his own cost.

Just ask him to return it at his own cost and say you will issue a full refund if there is a fault if not minus your initial shipping costs.

Is this a common scam on eBay? I've sold a couple of used hard drives within last month. Both well packaged. Both buyers claimed faulty on arrival. I was thinking RM put some packages through an X-ray machine or similar which was damaging them somehow.

I'm claiming for one, no outcome yet. Just found this......I got this little reading that based on some users’ experience; the information stored on the hard disk would be safe when it passes through like x-ray machines. The only danger of losing data is when the luggage is passed through a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. The MRI is the newest, and perhaps most versatile, imaging technology available using magnetic field. The x-ray on the other hand is based on light rays. It shows that there’s little hard from regular x-ray machines, but there’s a bit of concern with passing your laptop, netbook or portable external disk into an MRI.

Response

the packaging was sound and the drive was securely wrapped when received
the light on the drive goes blue when powered up
the drive doesnt spin or make any further noise
the drive isnt found at all by any of the computers
tried the solutions recomended by iomega site starting with a different cable
tried different ports and checking conflicts but nothing showing thought this was less likely as its affecting 3 different pc
tried using drive management to locate the drive and correct its path
drive will be posted back on thursday as going away monday night til thursday morning for a friends wedding in scotland

God knows why he wants proof of postage but I agree with the others that you shouldn't send it to him even though you will have his mails to prove he received it.

He prob has a faulty disk that he's going to try and exchange for your good one and the only way you can prove which is yours is if you'd taken a photo of it showing the serial number. If I send electrical stuff I always take a pic of it to avoid these situations.

The OP will need to refund the guy no matter if the OP has receipt or not.
The HDD arrived DOA so refund is 100% on the cards.

you will probably find he already had a dead drive and needed yours to replace that and will send his dead one back

Contact the seller & say yes I'll refund if you want as long as your returning the same HDD with the Serial number XXXXXXXXXXX If he's up to no good then he will just leave it as.

I am an experienced ebay seller since 04. I always take high res photos of each item from many angles detailing serials, imperfections or identifying marks and upload to photobucket allong with the listing. For expensive items I security mark with a UV pen and always dispatch using recorded fully tracked and signed for postage methods. Always upload tracking number to ebay once dispatched. And always communicate through ebay messaging system. Good luck

Thats not entirely what i ment, i ment the person who brought it would be refunded (that goes without saying if its faulty) and then if Op had given him the proof of postage the buyer would try claim the money off royal mail aswell for damaged in transit.. so in theory could get double the money back..

now I'm confused! You are the seller not the buyer.

why make his claim painful when in all likelihood it got damaged in transit.

just claim off RM when you get it back (if faulty).

the drive had become dislodged slightly in transport although was excellently packed"
