Ebay does it again.

Last time they did this there was an uproar of protest and they backed down. As far as i'm concerned i'm going to stop using ebay full stop when this comes in. The bit about 'investigating reports' on shill bidding is a complete joke, how can you report what you can't see?

----
***Protecting bidder User IDs ***

26 March, 2008 | 08:00AM GMT

From 31st March, we'll start hiding the User IDs of members bidding on all auction-style listings on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie. All bidder IDs on the Bid History page and the high bidder's ID on the View Item page will be masked.

The winning bidder's ID will be shown once the listing has ended but the other bidders' IDs will remain hidden. Sellers will still see all the bidders' IDs on their listing when signed in, and each bidder will see their own ID when signed in.

Why are we hiding bidder IDs?

eBay is an industry leader in helping defend users from the threat of fraudulent emails, websites and phishing attacks designed to extract confidential user information for criminal gains.

In early 2007, we began masking bidders' IDs on auction-style listings once the bid price went over a certain value. This proved very effective at reducing fraud from fake 'Second Chance Offers' (emails that are sent to bidders by fraudulent users pretending to be the seller and offering the item for sale outside of eBay).

Expanding the use of hidden IDs to cover all bids on auction-style listings will help us continue protecting bidders from this type of threat.

What about shill bidding?

Shill bidding (bidding on your own items) is a serious breach of eBay policy. We will investigate any reports we receive and take appropriate action against offenders.

Although the bidder IDs are anonymous, you can still see detailed statistics for each bidder by clicking on their masked ID. Our systems also collect more detailed information on selling and bidding activity than members can access, to help us detect patterns and accurately identify members who may be breaching the policy.
More about protecting User IDs

We appreciate that some people prefer to see all the details of who they're bidding against and may find hidden bidder IDs to be unwelcome. However, this is a necessary measure to protect all our members from email scams and fraud.

Regards,

The eBay Team

trust me, this is a fab idea. I have had a scam email today, due to my user name being listed on the bidding history. It protects people.

I guess shill bidding takes up too much of their time when it is reported, and since it means more money for their coffers, why would they stop it.

I've been the victim of a shill bidder, but because i could see the id's of the people i was bidding against I was able to bring it to ebay's attention. This is only going to exaberate the problem. They could just patialy hide the id's surely? Like they do when you get best offers on items you sell. Perhaps we should all email ebay with some sort of protest.

"woohoo, im going to make even more on my auctions now, i've got my home internet and my mob internet, what's to stop me bidding up a whole bunch of items!!!"

that's what many sellers will be thinking. Kitten, we do not trust you. It's a truly awful idea that will see many people getting ripped off.

You can get scam emails whether your is is visable or not. My mum gets scam emails nearly every day and she has only ever bought one thing from ebay 4 years ago! Ebay are getting ridiculous with their fees and changing rules. We should all boycott :)

How does it? If you get a SCO all you do is check its in your ebay page. If it''s not then its fake. How difficult is that? This way I can bid up my own items by opening multiple throwaway accounts and make you pay over the odds. Lovely for scam sellers. Even better than fake SCO's as it's all above board as far as the unwary buyer knows.

Yet again, it's ebay trying to hide a problem and the bad press that goes with it because it doesn't, and indeed can't effectively police it's own site.

then why dont you all just stop using it. stop complaining about it, just dont use it, simple

I did nominate billyx's post earlier for "Quote of the day", I think I would like to change my mind. :)

But policing would take time, money & 'manpower' while ebay can hire one IT savvy cleaning lady to sweep it all under the carpet...why pay more (unlss it profits ebay of course)??!?!

I stopped using ebay a few weeks ago now and protested by not paying my fees of £15 for things that didn't even sell!

Exactly. Could be a nice profit increase in DVD sales though if you were so inclined though, nudge nudge, wink wink

exactly. but some people are not happy unless complaining or belittling someone.

If my memory serves me right Ebay have been found guilty before of encouraging shill bidding ?

Anyway it's in Ebay's interests to ignore shill bidders whereas it's a pain in the rear to have to deal with all the scams relating to SCO's etc.

Most of the OH's DVD sales are BIN's with slightly 'exaggerated' P&P...only tend to use penny auctions to draw in punters & it's not worth the hassle of shilling on that.....

It's not quite as simple as that because so many people gave up their primary income to start an Ebay shop/business.

They are bound to be passionate about it.

Yeah I know, I remember you saying before. Problem you will now have is the 1p starters who shill their items making your BINS looks less attractive propositions. Admittedly that has always been a problem, but now its time for the floodgates to breach.

I have sold lots of items through ebay, by following OP items, and then contacting unsuccessful bidders about the items i have for sale. it meant I could list an item and have it sold within 10 mins at a really good price. Nothing was done dishonestly, and everything I sold was genuine and always equal to or below the price the unsuccessful bidder was prepared to pay elsewhere.

This was a loophole I found, and exploited, which now wont work - but then thats what makes competition fair isnt it. Not that Im too bothered as I cant be ars*d with ebay too much these days.

I sold my stuff, buyer was estatic at paying less by losing another auction bid, Ebay got paid, paypal got paid, post office got paid, EVERYONE HAPPY !!!

I'd suggest that every change starts with a bunch of people 'moaning' or 'complaining'.

Nobody is able to identify a problem and instigate a change immediately in the majority of situations.

I don't see much belittling on these forums- there are many times where a poster could have replied 'OMG that's so stupid' but the debate is normally polite, methodical, and educational- I noticed the change to 'hidden bidders' on ebay last time, and couldn't believe they would try and do that- then it changed back, and I had no idea why. I only know why because of this thread. If the only replies to the OP were 'yes I agree' and everyone else stayed off here, it wouldn't be of any interest to anyone.

Whatever happened to the proposal from google setting up an alternative to ebay?

I have a feeling it wouldnt take them long to build up a user base given the dissasifaction people have with ebay. It would obviously need a big player to suceed - and they dont come much bigger than google!

Of course the timing of this is all rather interesting as they will no doubt implement it so that it will kick in 100% on April 1st.....
