Hi Folks,

Wonder if you can help.

Hubby listed an iphone tonight on ebay, it was on a bid and buy it now. Someone has bought it but ebay account was only created tonight with no feedback

Buyer has paid via paypal which is showing as a 'confirmed address'. The street etc does exist and they haven't asked for it to be delivered anywhere else.

My question is hubby is worried that it's a 'scam' or a hijacked paypal account. How are we covered or how do we check? There isn't a phone number on the paypal account to ring and confirm the buyer, bit worried as it's a lot of money to lose if it's not a proper sale.

Can anyone help or offer advise please, I'm well aware that users have to get feedback some how but such a big purchase for a 1st time user. Her e-mail address consists of her first name plus a 45 then a 2009 @hotmail.com.

you should of blocked bidders with 0 feedback

maybe email the buyer ask them a few questions, if they email back with bad english then alarm bells should ring, try asking them to confirm address etc
#2
Send it by special delivery and make sure you keep the proof of postage.

Make a note of serial numbers and take as many pictures of the item as you can.
#3
Well you've been paid, so that's a good sign from a new buyer/user.
#4
you've basically given us her email address. Now for the combinations:
[email protected]">[email protected]
[email protected]">[email protected]
.....
but seriously, wait a few days and confirm it with them via email, via ebay, and via paypal etc.

i dont think that will make a difference thou, i maybe wrong if buyer claims credit card fraud or whatever the scam is nowdays paypal will still recover funds

althougth im not entirely sure

If the ebayer has paid, and the address has been confirmed as ok, I would just send it via RECORDED special delivery,

Try sending an EMAIL to the paypal address confirming the address and a message via ebay.

Everyone has to start somewhere on ebay, how local is the delivery address to you ??

I have a simlair thing a while ago.. sold my XBOX360 to a new user with no feedback.. but all was ok...

Just ensure you keep your eye on the resolution centre on paypal incase anyone files a cases against you etc.

Send at your own risk...

Don't send it! I got scammed by a zero feedback ebayer although they had paid. They ended up reversing the transaction (chargeback) and i lost both the phone and the money! I was selling it on behalf of a friend so it wasn't a good thing at all!
#8
I know it seems a bit silly but digital video record yourself putting the phone in the special delivery envelope and sealing the packet, showing the tracking number.
This way if they claim they received a brick you have proof to the contrary.

I know it's a bit over the top but, with paypal they always tend to favour the buyer.

Not got any advice for the OP, but after they've payed you, can't you take the money out of Paypal so that even if the buyer raises a complaint or whatever, Paypal can't stop you from getting the money, as you already have it in your bank account (hope that makes sense :p )
banned#11
You also have some seller protection, its not all one way

send it insured and signed for via post office to the registered address after making a note of the serial number
keep all your paperwork for 6 months

ebay will side with you and paypal will protect you if you keep all the information, and also take the money out of paypal anyway, they dont need it longer than necessary

I think you need to check your sources regarding postage insurance rates and re-read what i wrote......... Recorded, Special Delivery, (which is next day)

My understanding was that the Basic insurance is £500 and then payable upgrades to 1k and £2.5.

If you know different, please can you provide me a link to show me where a Royal Mail Special Delivery parcel is only insured upto £39 please?

This link is incorrect on their website as thats the info I use.

Special Delivery Next Day™

99% of all Special Delivery Next Day packages arrive by 1pm or earlier, but if yours doesn’t, the information below will tell you how we can help.

Has the 1pm deadline been reached?
If not, hold tight, it’s almost certainly on its way.

Was your Special Delivery Next Day item delivered after the 1pm deadline had passed?
If so, we’re very sorry and we’ll refund whatever you paid for Special Delivery. An additional payment of £5 will be payable if the item was delivered more than 24 hours (one working day) after the guaranteed time of delivery or, £10 will be payable and your fee refunded if the item was delivered seven or more working days after the guaranteed time.

What happens if your mail gets lost?
In the unlikely event that your mail gets lost, we'll refund the actual loss, up to a maximum value of the service used (£500, £1,000 or £2,500) or up to the market value whichever is the smaller amount. Please apply for this within 12 months.

If you’d like to claim for late or lost Special Delivery mail, you can do so here

Please note that Special Delivery items are not guaranteed for delivery on Saturdays or Sundays.

Cheers

With mobile phones, you can't take the money out of Paypal immediately - have a look at Paypal Ts&Cs. And, Paypal can always reclaim money from you later if you withdraw it all - unless you close down all your funding sources. ;-)

"Recorded Signed For" is a different service,

Lets leave it at that... i think we all know it was a typo using the term "RECORDED" before Special Delivery.. I will use the TM names in the future..

Anyhow....

If you are in doubt..

Refund the money via PAYPAL to the buyer.. and advise the item is no longer for sale..

Then re-list and stating members with over 10 positive feedback only.

If you refund a transaction, all fees from paypal will be refunded.

You will lose your ebay fee's unless the buyer agrees to mutual withdraw from the sale.

Sell it on here instead then...

When I used to sell laptops I would check out the person on the electoral roll and ask them to scan me passport and recent bill.
I got grief from buyers but never lost a penny. In fact some people (scammers) didn't comply and either the money was taken back from me (no loss to me) or on 2 occassions the money was never reclaimed.
If you don't want to do any of the above don't post until (if) a non receipt paypal claim is made. By that time if it is a scam the money should be raken back anyway.

here, you have 0 protection! they also expect postage before payment and rock bottom prices
#28
Some scam emails will be sent by the buyer to your email id with some fake domains. Check the email comes from the correct paypal domain. Also you can check your paypal account whether you received any transaction. If you feel confident....then you can send. It is good to avoid overseas address.
#29
First thing I would do is ask for a landline number to make sure they are in this country.

And can you not unseal a packet? Can you not send one that looks exactly the same?
Although it seems evidence, you have to consider any argument that could go against it.

That is fair enough, it wasnt anything personal, or a pot shot at you. Accidents and typos happen, I know I've done many!

Two choices,

1.) send it. You have the money in your account. If its a scam start the long process with paypal.
2.) dont send it and relist as collection only.

Phones are tricky things to sell. Make damn sure its not to Nigeria or paid with Western Union money transfers.

How long have they been members? She may have joined just to get an iphone. Email her and ask for some reassurance/proof of address.

Wow i seriously wouldn't send someone a scan of my passport and bill, you could cause lots of mischief with that, if someone asked for that i would think they were a scammer

I am curious as to what mischief could be made with a jpeg of a passport and bill?
#34
I wouldn't take the risk, nine times out of ten it's a scammer/dodgy buyer and you will end up out of a pocket as others have mentioned,i wouldn't sell a phone on Ebay these days, too much hassle.

Identity theft, that's pretty much all you need to perform it nowadays.
#36
check with paypal to see if you are covered by seller protection for the transaction..its on the transaction page
#37
You cannot have 'confirmed address' unless you have bought an item and delivered? I don't understand how a 0 feedback buyer has a confirmed address?
Very doddery? I will wait until the buyer contact you or check with paypal that the address comply with the credit card and the confirmed address.

Quite often for higher value items, when the buyer has paid paypal will hold the money, for something like 28 days or until positive feedback is left. It means the seller can't withdraw the money to their account straight away, and give the buyer 28 days to make a dispute.

OP, if you do send it, make sure it's special delivery and give the tracking to Paypal straight away. Make sure you take plenty of photos showing the condition of the phone, and close ups of any marks etc. And make sure you copy down the serial number (IMEI?) in case they try to return a dud one. All of which has been said before, but doesn't hurt to say again!!

So then you could stop recording and unseal the packet then seal a new empty bag couldn't you? Admit it, it's a crap idea.
