From 15th June sellers listing in selected categories in Video Games, Mobile & Home Phones, Consumer Electronics, Computing, Photography, and Clothes, Shoes & Accessories will be required to offer free P&P as their first domestic postage option.

Why is eBay making this change?
Excessive P&P costs are cited as a major reason for buyers spending less on eBay. Free P&P is increasingly standard on online shopping sites, and offering the same on eBay contributes to a higher rate of successful sales. To ensure
eBay remains a dynamic marketplace, well be introducing the requirement to offer free P&P for listings in selected categories (see below).

How will this benefit me?
Shoppers are more likely to buy your items if the P&P is free, as buyers are increasingly used to seeing free P&P offered while shopping online.

How will eBay help keep prices fair for me and my customers?
We understand that sellers might be concerned that they'll have to absorb the cost of P&P so well be offering Final Value Fee promotions and other incentives from time to time. From 6th April to 30th June, eBay Shop owners will qualify for a 20% Final Value Fee discount when they offer free P&P in the categories listed above. (Terms & conditions apply.) Sellers should also bear in mind that the requirement to offer free postage & packaging applies only to the first domestic P&P option. Further chargeable shipping services can be offered in addition.

The categories we've selected are extremely competitive in the UK with online retailers increasingly offering free delivery. We believe this is the market price for P&P for those categories in the UK.

If only that were the reason ebay were doing this.

If an item has free postage, the final price of that item is likely to be higher = more fee's for ebay.

What a load of crap.

but as google is everyones mate stuff can be found cheaper if you look hard and now with other fleabay type sites popping up the choice is getting better

It works out worst for my buyers as we offer a flat rate fee.. if this affected me then they wouldn't be able to buy more and save on postage.
#7
What I don't get is why ebay don't just take this 'factual information', tell the ebay sellers, and give them the choice of whether they want to sell with free p&p.

........ oh thats right, because ebay want us to pay more fees on the final sale price :(

Poo, I sell all my family's clothes on ebay so I'm not impressed with having to give free p&p. I can see that it will be me losing out here as I bet the selling price doesn't increase and I never ripped off my customers with p&p. I can see this putting a lot of sellers off ebay, shall we start up our own site - anyone?

i dont know why ebay dont just set a upper limit on post like they must know how much it costs to pack and post a dvd set a max you can charge for post and leave it at that, its mad making you give free post its not free and it can work out quite high for clothing ect :(

amazonification is coming.....

soon it will be free postage across the board as they look to make more money from the cashcow paypal
currently 28% of business and they looking to increase to 40% within the next 2 years......

postage is 1 way of increasing but id imagine paypal fees will be rising shortly also

I have been for a while wondering, whether ebay are trying to ruin their own business.
Obviously this is so they get more final value fees. But compare that to sellers they will lose.

I stopped selling whn they brought in that we couldnt leave neg feedback. But this is just stupid aint it.
Clothes will now be put up to cover p&p and a little bit added by unsavoury sellers.
I get most of our clothes new or gc from ebay what will i do then?
I have 9 people to clothe so i get my evans ones from ebay . I know the quality and sizing im getting then.
Im wafflin aint i?

its a joke , so they can make more money charging excessive final evaluation fees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#21
Grrrr. Why should the seller be punished and made to be out of pocket? There are usually multiple listings of the same item varying different prices and prices in p&p. It is the buyers choice that when they buy an item and pay the required p&p that they are happy paying for that amount, or they would have gone to a competitive seller.

As a buyer on ebay if I think p&p is too high I don't bother with it. But as a seller I have to pay to post so why shouldn't I be able to charge for it?

agreed i mean ebay/ paypal charge for postage labels which i find a bloom cheek!
#26
Free post is a joke its simply to make money hopefully people get wise and there target figures drop and they eventually scrap this ludicrous scheme.
#27
Like someone mentioned above, surely people should be able to decide whether to shop or not. When making a bid on ebay I always factor in the cost of the p&p into the total price I am willing to pay, if they are charging way over the odds then I'm not going to bid as much for the item so the seller loses out anyway (or makes up the difference on over charging p&p) but it's irrelevant as I still only bid the total price I want to.

The only thing therefore that this is going to affect is the amount of commission ebay will get and with the final value fee going up they are the winners and them only which is infuriating. We should be able to decide how much we are going to charge p&p and if I was to put it for free p&p then I would just bump up the start price/buy it now price to cover it so buyers aren't going to win, like I said - ebay are the only winners here and this is what gets my back up.
#28
Won't really be worth me selling on ebay...not that I sell a lot on there but for people trying to make a bit of extra cash the FVF will put them off. What a shame. It will end up with just businesses selling on there. But you're right .....we can sell on here!
#29
i know some people were putting start price at £2.00 but then with postage they would put cost of the item so maybe ebay were losing out that way......
#30
tinkerbell28
It's not just about the fees, although it does work out nicely. Like I said on one of the first posts, this is the next step towards Amabay, Ebayzon, whatever you want to call it.
They don't want the small sellers, the small trader/second hand carboot type seller that made ebay what it is, is not wanted!

Yes they were it was called fee evasion.

Ebay will die soon as you can buy and sell stuff in other places now including concert tickets. so i agree with you.
#31
Never understand buyers that whinge about postage costs, if its clear in the listing you don't have to buy it!
I also change the search results to cheapest with p&p first so I get the best deal anyway.
This is just getting silly as after ebay & paypal fee's plus postage costs how can you make any money?
They are scaring off all the personal sellers as now you cant leave a negative even if you are dealing with a complete nutter who just negs you for no reason & now you cant charge postage on all these things.
I used to buy & sell loads on ebay so can see both points of view but personal sellers are just getting shafted!!
