Hi guys! i need some advice regarding ebay returns.. I sold a working and tested used hard drive i had on ebay, the customer has used it and installed vista on it fine and vista booted up fine, however, he said that when he was updating his drivers and programs, the pc started to restart and now won't boot into windows.. he even tried reinstalling vista from scratch..

what should I do? he is asking for a refund but the hard drive was working fine before.. any advice would be appreciated as I am fairly new to ebay.

you should have specified this before the sale as a returns policy ideally but as your new you wont know :)

make sure hes not scamming (sending yo ua faulty hdd back that you didnt send him)
if there genuinely is a problem offer to take the hdd back and install vista with all the drivers he wants to prove who is right or wrong

personally i think he has done something wrong can he verify theres nothing wrong with his pc and not your hard drive ?

thanks for the advice, i think on the ebay page itself under "Return policy" section, it states "The seller will not accept returns for this item"

is there a way for me to install vista on the the hard drive for him if he returns just the drive to me? i thought operating systems need to be installed specific to each computer as my pc will have different hardware than his..

what will happen if he complains to ebay? also, i need to state that he hasn't left me feedback yet.. so i will have 1 negative feedback as a result of this..

would 1 negative feedback affect my sales?

he will go to paypal and will be told to send it back.... then they will refund him.....

1negative won't harm you ...... wwhats your feedback score ? negatives run out in 12 months so you will go back to 100% soon

the more postivies you have the better your percentage will be

if he goes to paypal, will they take the money refunded to him from my account?

my feedback score is 20 but 100% positive..

Personally I would ask him to return it to the manufacturer if it is still under-warranty so he can get a replacement drive. Or I would take it back, refund his money, test it, if it is the drive, then do as above (return to manufacturer if the warranty is still valid). If it is working fine, re-list it correctly (see below). I guess I'm a nice guy though, you could just tell him to go away lol.

When I sold hardware on eBay I listed it as returnable only if the item is DOA (dead on arrival) otherwise they have to take it up with the manufacturer. Basically though you need to state this in the listing, so any future issues that appear you can just point to that little bit of information in the listing which should suffice.

gonna look pretty bad on your percetage ..... paypal will take the money from your account

best thing to do is to offer to refund the cost (not shipping charges) then he will offer +iv feedback..

when you get the hd back fully test it (and wipe it if necessary) and sell it again

How did you advertise it? Just as a hard drive? If he has bought it and installed vista on it then it's not your fault that it has gone wrong. Was it all working fine when sold etc? I assume so? He won't be able to get a refund through paypal as you have done nothing wrong. It worked on arrival, you didnt advertise it incorrectly...

Put yourself into his shoes. You bought a hard drive and it doesn't work properly.

As the buyer you would expect to be able to send the drive back. If it does turn out to be faulty you probably would expect a full refund for the drive and postage each way.
If it is not faulty just refund the bare drive, not the postage costs and sell it again.

Unless you advertised it as "untested parts".

It might not be the hard drive...

Dont know if a laptop is different but my laptop (after being returned to be fixed) came back working ok, then the next day started freezing and rebooting itself. Then it rebooted but wouldnt boot into windows. It just sat there doing nothing. We tried to reformat, reinstall etc but it wouldnt have anything so it was sent back to be repaired. It came back with a new mainboard and works fine now.

pre installing vista .. it prob wont work unless you had the board for vista to read the board to know what to load in ???

hdd causing conflict dont think so prob memory ..had that on my p4 3ghz MT wierd

if paypal are on your case . as a last resort offer to take it back at expense and state drive details will be checked against your dispatch details ... that will also be sent to the buyer if they are trying to pull one it'll spook em also if they dont send it back without proof ..you didnt get it back ???? then its up to you to decide
