Just want to check for a friend to see if he's maybe getting scammed.

He's bought a phone and it doesn't work. The seller has said to send it back for a refund. The address he's given is in the UK but the phone was sent from Italy and the seller is registered in France. So does this mean that he's got to send it to France or Italy in order to get his money back from Paypal?

Not sure what address Paypal are going to say to return it to ( I assume they say which address to send it to? ), just wondered if this was a scam? ie he wouldn't get a refund as he'd have to send it to France but would send it to the UK as the seller has asked him to?

Thanks!

id say the address it was sent from cause otherwise you can provide paypal with a tracking nunmber for a uk address and he can claim he has no idea who that is for.
#2
so long as he keeps all the messages from the seller and they were sent through ebay im sure he will be ok.
#3
good luck!

the best option might be to open a paypal query (dont escalate it) and ask him to provide the uk address in writing into the query then that way paypal can see you have sent it where he has said and then if you dont get refund can straight away dispute it and he cant play any games about where it was sent :)

So now he's got to pay for postage to Italy as the guy sent it from there? The item location in the listing was in the UK.

I assume paypal tell you what address they're going to check it's been returned to ?

is the best option cause then its just logged with paypal and they can see a record of any communication you place in it, it isnt official until its escalated to a full blown dispute so wont go against him at all if it is closed as resolved between yerselfs

Thanks for your help everyone.

OK guys, need a little more help.

My friend has opened up a dispute and he says that Paypal say they are waiting for the seller to authorize the refund. I thought they were the ones who would authorize the refund? What if the seller doesn't respond?

Anyway, the seller has told him to send it back to a UK address. He sent this through ebay, not the paypal dispute which I thought was strange? Is this so that Paypal have no record of him giving this address?

So basically my friend is just sat waiting for something to happen, nothing is going to happen as the seller isn't going to authorize the refund as he would already have done it. What does my friend do? I've told him to send it back to the address that Paypal want him to send it to but Paypal haven't given him an address, the only one he has is the one sent through ebay.

Any ideas on what he should do? Should he escalate the dispute? Should he send it back to the UK address? Even though the guy is registered in France so Paypal may be expecting it to be sent to France?

Any help glady appreciated.

why not? if you excualte it and say that you have been told to return to an address your not really sure about, paypal will then tell you where to return it to

The seller hasn't responded to the dispute so he still doesn't know which address to send it to, any reason you say don't escalate it or should he now escalate it?

escalate it & put a message saying that you need a UK address to send the phone back too.......

when he gives this in the dispute...... send the phone back recorded or special delivery .... NO LESS...... if you don't send via recorded or special then the seller can say he hasn't recieved it back........

need any more help holler ....... paypal are asses but come good (most of the time) for buyers

whats is the registered paypal address of the seller, it should have been on his payment slip, because i believe that is the address paypal will ask you to return the phone to

Thanks,

My friend has escalated it and put exactly that.

The phone is worth £60, is it worth the extra few quid for special seeing as most of the value will be covered anyway? If it was me I think I'd pay it as you're guarenteed a signature, whereas with recorded they don't always get one.

I don't know, I wasn't aware that you could see the address of the seller. I'll ask my friend to check.

I thought that Paypal would be the one to say where they expect it to be returned to, otherwise the buyer could just tell you to send it to Nigeria then you'll never see it or your money again!

Only potential problem is that the guy is registered in France so his registered address may be in France too?

if he paid over £39 then recorded will be of no use if it goes missing

He'll get £36. Doesn't matter that it's worth more. It's like a £4 bet to win £25. As long as there's a good chance it'll arrive then on average he's better off.

paypal will ask you to send back to his verified address, on all invoices i have sent out for payment my address has been on it

recorded is 10 x the value of a 1st class stamp :)

send special if its worth £60...... if it goes missing, your friend will lose out, you need to send it special so that you can prove to paypal that the seller has recieved

I'd probably send special to ensure a signature and full cover, but like I said it's a £4 bet to win £25 with fairly good odds. As long as it get delivered at least 80% of the time then he's better off on average.

ya but thats 20% chance it don't turn up then ya lose out £60 plus the cost of postage......

my major grievance with paypal is that if a seller sends you wrong item, then you have to pay for the item to be sent back for a refund :| unless the seller offers to pay it ...... paypal doesnt enforce sellers to do this ,.......

its a bit of a scam really but hey what can we do? paypal have a monopoly .......
#28
i received something once it cost me £40, didnt work and the seller refused to do anything about his words were tough luck!!! so i done an item not recieved thingy as seller didnt send recorded got my money back, its the only way to make sure you down get scammed im afraid scam the scammer althougth i did send back the faulty item to seller once i had my refund serves him right.

play the system as they do i dont condone or imply this is the right thing to do but its the only way to be sure your get your money back from bad sellers, i made sure i sent the faulty item back to the seller thou otherwise would of made me as bad as them

Only lose £25, if you're a gambling man then the odds are good.

Risky, I'd just show Paypal the proof you'd received it as you said it was faulty, therefore you must have received it.

Then I'd call the police!!!

£60, the £25 is the amount he'd be short if the recorded item went missing.

It's actually £24, £60 - £36 he'd get back.

For a £4 bet (amount saved not taking special) it's good odds. On average he'd be better off.

Why wouldn't they?

If they don't get a signature for a recorded item and the guy tells Paypal that he hasn't received it then they'd have to pay out the £36.

i wouldn't risk it but thats me cos ya relying on RM paying out & ya letting the seller off the hook

tell your mate also to NEG the chit...... to warn others about he doesnt refund easily ;)

I'll recommend special, it's alot less hassle and risk and you're right about it costing RM rather than the seller.

I'm not sure a neg is appropriate. He's said to send it back and he'll give a refund but for some reason he's not saying any of it through paypal which worries me. If he'd given the address through paypal then there would be no problem.
