Ebookers charged me twice...and wont refund me

Ok, I went to NY last week :)
Prior to leaving, I tried to book flights via ebookers...but it told me that the checkout was unsuccessful, and to reorder. (ebookers agree with this).
I reordered the same flights successfully....but had no email for 30minutes so went to bed.
The next day, I found I had 2 order confirmations that looked identical, and were 4minutes apart....and just assumed ebookers hit send twice.
After the holiday, I found that I had been charged for 2 lots of flights.

Phoned ebookers CS, who inform me that I cannot have a refund as it is my fault for not letting them know before the flight left the ground. I disagree totally. I appreciate that I could have been more aware, and studied the 17digit flight reference to see that they are different...but it is Ebookers fault that they charged me twice. If I try to order, but they decline...they have no legal right to go ahead and bill me for it anyway.
They say I should have been more vigilant and spotted the error last week and called up. However, I say that the lack of vigilence is with ebookers who (a) charged me for something I did not agree to, and (b) processed seats twice for the same 2 people, for the same flight.

Can anybody advise me where to go next?
Im rather angry.

It is not MY responsibility. Ebookers charged me for something that I did not agree to, and that does not give them the right to tell me that they can charge me for what they like...unless I spot it before the flight takes off...or can they??

What sort of card did you use to pay credit/debit card?

If I was you I'd look at rasisng a chargeback - which is in effect a disputed transaction with your bank explaining you have been double charged.

in fairness to them though you could have booked once foir you and once for A friend or something and now trying it on.
saying that i would be fuming too.

Oh try and get soemthing via e-mail etc.. that says that they agree that the first time was unsuccesful

I'm afraid I don't think you will be successful. I had the same problem almost with Ryanair who are even worse as you can only fax or send a letter to their customer services deparment. I paid by visa and haven't been able to get any money back and I can't even sell the flights to anyone else as the name change fee from Ryanair is £70 for each person. I'm still trying a few things and will let you know if I get any success in the next few days.

Thanks. It was paid for via Mastercard, so I can do a chargeback if everything else fails, or at least try to.
The bottom line is so simple to me. I tried to order and it didnt go through...their page told me that, and said reorder. Clearly something is worryingly wrong with their system if it processes orders that have been refused.
Thanks for the support.

I will email their cs department and try to get confirmation that it only went through once. For a start, it only tracked on quidco once, which is a good bit of help :)
Cant afford to pay £478 twice though,,, and the end of the billing cycle is in a few days. Any later, and it will cost me overdrawn fees too as it comes out via direct debit

I understand that any error in the booking email should be raised with the company...to avoid problems at the airport etc. But if it not my fault, and not for an order I even placed successfully, then that rule does not apply.
Im rather mad about it all.
What cheek to tell me that I should be more vigilant. Why should I have to keep an eye out for illegal charges? And then be punished if I dont spot it quickly enough

All sorted.
My initial argument about how they were acting illegally in charging me for something that I never agreed to has paid off.
They phoned back and said that they will refund me. They are taking the hit, since NWA wouldnt repay ebookers for the flight that they ordered incorrectly.
Have to wait 10-12days for the refund to appear allegedly...but I will live with that

Well done. I know I would have taken them to court if they had tried that on with me. Why should you have to pay for their own inability to manage their website, its transactions and payments. The site informed you to rebook.... end of story. Their mistake, their bill.

Having a similar problem with an internet travel booking. Hubby & I found a great deal to Sri Lanka for £579 per person All inc in April. It took a few days to get hold of the agent to actually book & we got charged an extra £20 each. This was over a month ago now & although not a huge amount it was not an amount I agreed to. If they hadn't taken the whole price up front (far in excess of 10 weeks before travel) there would have been no need to refund me in the 1st place.

EBOOKERS one of the worst travel booking portal. which wont give you a clear picture of actual amount redeem from your account.. you will be notify only after completion of all the booking process.

I booked a ticket from indian card. It charged extra amount. which is half of the total ticket amount... I was surprised .. i came to know the amount only after completion of all the booking process.

There is no OTP process.no notification of total amount before booking.. Lot of hidden charges for the people , who do trasaction through (indian)INR card. No TOLL free number to complain. No email Complain box...No procedure and guideline for overseas transaction ....cahrging amount more than expected...

So please don't book through ebookers fron INR card.....it will cost you extra charge . which is half of the amount of ticket

This is the problem with the new site though, you used to be able to tell before you looked at a thread, now I started reading all this not realising it's well old!
