Im living in private rented accomodation and im on an electric meter, which is economy 7. I am with EDF (which I cant change). I ahve lived here for several years but only now have I realised that I would be better using tumble dryer etc at night - but my question is, what do EDF count as "night". I live in Hertfordshire, which I believe is part of the eastern area covered by edf.

So, does anyone know what time the rate 1, night rate starts and ends?

Thanks

That's ok:-D You should hear a distinctive click from the meter when it turns to the day rate. I suppose it happens the other way around too, but I am usually asleep by that time.

This is from the following PDF on the EDF website:

http://www.edfenergy.com/products-services/for-your-home/documents/edf-standard-tariffs-25-07.pdf

Where applicable, the Band A day rate will apply to a block of 1000 kWh each year. This
will be applied on a pro rata basis for each day covered by the relevant bill and rounded
to the nearest whole kWh. e.g. for an electricity bill covering 90 days the first 247 kWh
used in that billing period will be charged at the Band A day rate, all other day kWh will
be charged at the Band B day rate. Night kWh will be supplied for a total of 7 hours
between 10pm and 8am (actual times set by the local network operator) and these will
be charged off the Night kWh rateV.

Ive been thinking, I dont know why I even have economy 7. My bills are quite dear (approx £100 per quarter) for a small 2 bed masionette. I have gas central heating, i dont use much electric at night so I see no point me having it

I have had mine taken out but it was from midnight to 7am and 1am to 8am in summer, I couldn't hear the click.......poundland have timers at the moment!
There is a mention on Wikepedia about it and apparantly ther are slight regional variations on the time, quite interesting, though.

Not necessarily correct. I'm on EDF Economy 7 (it was here when we moved in) and the cheap rate goes from 22.30-00.30 GMT and then from 02.30-07.30 GMT (or 23.30-01.30 and 03.30-08.30 on summertime). Find your meter and you should have 2 sets of counters, one labelled 'Normal' the other 'Low'. Mine has an arrow which points to whichever rate is charging at the time. Go and look at your meter from about 10pm every 30 mins and see which set of numbers are moving. You should then be able to work out your times.

thanks everyone

my meter has a sticker on it which says rate 2 (should say rate 1) its from 00.30 - 7.30. However, its annoying as the digital time on it is twenty minutes fast.

I am with EDF economy 7 at the same times as you, however since the meter was put in nearly 10 years ago once it 'clicks' over to cheap rate after about 10 mins it 'clicks' back to normal rate for usually 8 minutes then 'clicks' back to cheap rate. Not sure if it does the same during the 2.30 - 5.30am time slots....!!! Not sure if I can complain to EDF to get the meter look at?

You should get your meter changed to a standard one, your day rate on Economy 7 is far higher than on a standard meter.
