Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday, November 17, that `Eid Al-Adha, one of the two main religious festivals on the Islamic calendar, will fall on Friday, November 27. "The new moon of Dhul-Hijjah was sighted by trusted witnesses on Tuesday in a number of provinces," the Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement published by the state-run Saudi Press Agency. "Thus, Wednesday, November 18, will mark the beginning of the lunar month of Dhul-Hijjah."

South Africa : Dr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim (MCW member) from Cape Town reported: The Dhul Hijjah Hilaal was sighted by naked eye from Signal Hill and Bakoven in Cape Town this Tuesday evening at 20:15

UK : Aziz Raje (MCW member) from Ilford Essex reported: We had beautiful clear skies in the South East of UK, many of us attempted sighting after Maghrib Salah but we were unable to sight the Hilal. There is no reliable news from anywhere else in the UK, however we have confirmed sighting news from Cape Town, South Africa. Wifaqul Ulama UK have therefore announced that the 1st Day of Dhul Hijjah 1430 will be on Wednesday 18th November 2009. So Eid ul Adha 1430 in the United Kingdom will be on Friday 27th November 2009 Insha Allah. Eid Mubarak.

India : Khalid Umer Maniar (MCW member) from Surat, Gujrat reported: The new moon was sighted easily today wednesday, 18th Nov 2009. Our Eid will be on Saturday, 28th insha-Allah.

India (2) : Mohammed Mohsin Khan (MCW member) from Mumbai reported: Today Wednesday 18 November 2009 / 29 Zil Qa'dah 1430 in India. Here in Mumbai Sunset was at 06:00 p.m LT and Moonset was at 07:11 pm LT. So there was 1 hr 11 mins difference. Sky was clear and Crescent has been sighted in Mumbai and in Most Parts of India. Official Moon-Sighting Committee have announced that Wednesday 18 November 2009 was 29th Zil Qa'dah 1430 and 1st Zil Hijjah 1430 will fall on Thursday 19 November 2009. So Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated on 28 November 2009 in India.

Pakistan : Mahfooz Elahi from Islamabad reported: Today, November 18, Wednesday, I was able to see the Crescent in Islamabad at 17:33. May Allah accept our ibaadah in these first 10 days of dhul-Hajja.

Pakistan (2) : Sultan Alam (MCW member) from Karachi reported: On my request, Today (Wednesday 18 November 2009 = 29 Zul-qadah 1430 in Pakistan) many hundred persons (Members of the moon-sighting committees of our institute "JAMIA-TUR-RASHEED" + my friends + their companions) tried to sight the moon all over Pakistan and resultantly easily sighted the crescent at more than 30 places. Generally, the weather was clear. It is also announced officially that tomorrow i.e. Thursday 19 November 2009 is 1st Zul-Hijjah 1430 and Saturday 28 November 2009 is Eidul-Adhha in Pakistan.

Canada : Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM for Quebec, Canada) Announcement: Salam Elmenyawi (MCM member) from Montreal reported: Based on credible reports, the crescent has been sighted in number of places in our agreed upon horizon (South Africa and Chile) in accordance with the imams' approved criteria. Therefore, Wednesday, November 18th will be the first day of Dhul-Hijja, and Friday, November 27th will be the day of Eid-ul-Adha, in shaa Allah Taala.

As this thread is about a religious festival some of the cruder off topic comments are a bit inappropriate & disrespectful - can you continue the 'countdown' discussion in your own misc thread please rather than hijacking this one, thanks. (relevant comments now removed).
