Detroit 2010: ZAP Alias electric trike
The weird three-wheeled, battery-powered ZAP Alias on display on Detroit's Electric Avenue might look like a wedgy sci-fi film prop, but it's due to hit the streets soon.
What's all the fuss about?
Detroit is going big with the green angle, so much so it's created an area called Electric Avenue for all the wacky battery-powered machines from manufacturers keen to show their planet saving vehicles. Undoubtedly one of the oddest on display is this ZAP Alias, which thanks to its three wheels is homologated as a motorcycle rather than a car.
What makes it so green?
The Alias is powered by an AC induction motor running at 216 volts, which gives it the ability to reach 60mph in 7.8 seconds and a top speed in excess of 75mph. The range is around 100 miles, depending of course on how you drive it.
When can I buy one?
The Alias is currently undergoing prototype testing, but the company has some real credibility in the electric vehicle field, having apparently delivered over 117,000 electric vehicles since 1994. These have mostly been small urban delivery trucks, though ZAP already produces some small electric cars and scooters that you can buy right now. The Alias looks good to follow them.
