My grandad has just had a key meter fitted 3 weeks ago. he was on cards b4 that. afte 2 days using the keys the meter was using electricity very fast as much as £5 a day where he was using £10 a week .. he rang powergen up and they read it and said he owed £300. then my sister rang him up on his behalf and they said it was £90. He obviouisly cant owe any due to using cards!? And he cant afford to keep putting in £5 a day... they said they are taking it off him by meter.

Where does he go to get this sorted out? Is there any number he can ring to get any advice on who can help him?

oh noo poor Grandad-these things worry them so much-its terrible that companies can do this and he is lucky he has his family to help him...we have just sorted stuff foe my mum age 78 and i dont know how she would cope if she didnt have us with things like this. Have you got local welfare centre or CAB?

there must also be an electricty help group just cant find one..

Sounds like they think he has a previous debt (which is normally the reason they install key meters). The meter will then start taking money out of whatever he puts in to repay this debt.
Did he have a credit account with them before?

Nope no debt as he was paying for cards there for the last 15 years. they just came out and installed this new meter and didnt say why. It seem dodgy that they did this for no reason and that they gave him a £300 bill then £90 for my sister when she rang up. And also that its sucking electric like that. CAB is in town but its a 5 hr wait and not too good for a pensioner! Thats why i was thinking if anyone knew a number to ring..

Thanks for your replies i will try numbers tomorrow.

oh i just asked my sis.....they had a engineer out, he said that my grandad had a debt from april 2005 til april 2007 as they didnt oout up his prices. But didnt tell him how much or anything they are taking from him he hasnt had any letter at all from them. Can they do this? surely its there fault.

Do you have an age concern or welfare rights centre near by? There is a great welfare rights centre not far from us and they have sorted out loads of these sorts of problems for people in the area, age concern can usually offer advice as well.

Sounds like your debt has arisen because they have been undercharging your units, If they have never tried to contact your grandfather to arrange entry to his house to update the meter to current electricity prices (this is where the debt has arisen from) then this isnt his fault. If you contact his energy supplier and inform them that you are contacting Energywatch they normally will right off some or all of the outstanding debt because it is there responsibility to make sure meters are charching at the current electricity prices.

He will have a debt but again not his Fault (aslong as they didnt try to contact him to arrange entry to his house and was either refused or couldnt gain entry due to whatever reason)

The payment card meter because it was never set to the new prices will have been undercharging his account for years and so explains the debt.

Remember contact his energy suppliers and say you are going to contact ENERGYWATCH. Good Luck
