Electronic jogging/running accessories. Any recommendations?

I'm looking to take up jogging and have recently seen things on the market that you seem to attach to your trainers and links up with your phone, MP3 player and heart rate monitor strap e.t.c.

Any ideas if these things are any good? Which one should I get? Was looking at 'micoach' from Samsung/Adidas but don't want to shell out on a new phone just for the privilege of using. What is the one from Nike like? Same, I don't want to shell out on special 'nike' trainers, as my Asics are great.

I currently have: -
Polar HR monitor and strap
Asics GT2130's
SE K800i

Also been thinking of purchasing a separate MP3 player for runs as using me mobile is rubbish. Any ideas on MP3 players fit for purpose would also be appreciated.

the new ipod nanos have a feature where you can hook it up with nike+ (which you put into a pair of nike shoes) and then it wireless transmits your progress data and details to your ipod

or something along those lines. sorry, but i don't know how well it works, never personally tried it...

This is the kind of thing I'm on about, something to keep my runs interesting. But do you have to buy the trainers as well? I don't really want to replace my Asics for Nike. Would my MP3s be compatible with a ipod or is it worth me getting another player?

the nike + system is awesome, its very inspiring and you can link it up with the website for all sorts of features, you do not need the special trainers as you can get velcro straps that attach to the laces! You do need an ipod nano unfortunately but it is well worth it! try ebay as well

a friend of mine removed the sole of his adidas' and cut a small chamber into his trainers to slot it into. this would probably work with your asics.

LOL - Don't think I'll do that but sounds innovative!

I've never had an ipod before, if I get one can I easily transfer my MP3s or would I have to buy my songs from itunes?

Easy to transfer all your mp3 collection to your nano.I have a nano and nike+ system and its great. It really helps to keep you motivated and see how your improving.Again i didnt buy the nike trainers but bought cheap holder that straps to my running shoe. The nano is great its so portable.Easy to use, lightweight and no jumping tracks because it has no hard drive.

I would definitely recommend the Nike+. It might be a little expensive if you dont have an iPod but look on eBay.
It really is amazing. You can track all your runs in your area and by putting your postcode into their system you can trace a route and it comes back to tell you how many miles etc and how long it will take based on your speed. You can also arrange runs against people from around the world and if you know any of your mates that have it you can do distance runs against eachother to see who could run, say, 10 miles in a week. It really is good fun and if you are thinking of getting fit then it really is perfect.
