An email is circulating among Labour MPs encouraging Gordon Brown to step down as Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown is under intense pressure ahead of tomorrow's elections

Sky News has obtained a copy of the email which says:

Dear Gordon,

Over the last 12 years in government, and before, you have made an enormous contribution to this country and to the Labour Party, and this is very widely acknowledged.

However we are writing now because we believe that in the current political situation, you can best serve the Labour Party and the country by stepping down as party leader and prime minister, and so allowing the party to choose a new leader to take us into the next general election.

Yours,

XXXX

Blears announced she was leaving

It then asks MPs to sign the letter and send it to a particular email address. It will only be "published" once 50 MPs have signed it.

The email was revealed on the day that Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said she was resigning from the Cabinet.

Sky's chief political correspondent Jon Craig said: "This is circulating amongst Labour MPs and it shows that the talk of a plot is real.

"My understanding is that the plan is to have this campaign ready to go after the results of the local council elections on Friday or possibly on Monday after the results of the European elections.

"It is all being done anonymously at the moment.

"At some stage, people will have to come out of the wood and identify themselves otherwise no one will take it seriously."

Yeah it would be just our luck if the rest of the world took his advice and came through the recovery alright and we ended up with some headline grabbing PM and sank like a stone,

That may have been the conventional wisdom a few months ago, but not quite so now. The VAT reduction was a total shambles. He was slow to act on Northern Rock as well.

The worst thing is that his position has become untenable.

In my opinion, the best man for the job is Vince Cable.

It just gets so boring, I know I am only 28 but I remember the misery of the tories well. What will happen, we will vote for change, get a new party, new PM, a Tory majority will be a very nasty reality given time.
We then lynch that leader, and the whole sorry cycle starts again :-(

True.

Could vote Lib Dem.

Yes but will everyone else stray from the main 2, breaking the cycle to give a healthy opposition to the next Tory govt?

More straying from the mainstream due to the current distrust will see seats being gained by the likes of UKIP and the BNP - if this happens, then we have discussions . . . .

I'll be voting snp thankfully up here we have another alternative.

All a bunch of numptys.

I am not a G Brown fan however he alone isnt responsible for our mess, its the entire Labour Government. Tony Blair made the mess and left leaving someone else to take the flack.
Regardless who steps in, its too late in my eyes. Id prefer an election brought forward so we, the public have the decision.

This expenses thing been going on for years, its only now because FOI it can be made public that we are aware to what extent. They may not be breaking any rules however morally they shouldnt be milking it like they do.

I big cheer the Welsh Assembly AM INDEPENDENT who was the ONLY one who had NOT claimed any expenses!! good for her!!
#25
i think this mess goes back a little further than the current labour government

hardly think the country was in a healthy state when they took over in the first place

i think an audit of the last 10/15 years is in order for all mp's......or at least the last 5
#26
Indeed and it slowly got worse until we as a country hit rock bottom which sadly i feel we are heading.
