End of date products in supermarkets....

Say supermarket A have reduced Item A to 75% off original price, as they are nearing end of date and the product has become damaged.

Would you open the package, take out the "bad" items from it, and ask for a reduction cos you don't want half of the items?

Just read a thread on mse and it amazed me that much, i had to get opinions

Can you do that? as in.. legality? personally if they were rotten/mouldy i wouldnt want to touch it.. lol

not sure on legality but as you haven't paid for the item then you shouldn't open the package. It's reduced for a reason

they would just be like, I'll dispose of that for you, meanwhile here's a fresh pack for you. I work at Waitrose and thats what we do anyway!

some things are just not worth it even if its reduced, i saw steak reduced at tescos tonight but more than half the pack was brown ewwwwwwwwwwwwww

but the item is reduced for a reason :| Supermarkets always try to sell their "damaged" goods off cheap, otherwuse they have to put the items on the waste bill for the day :thumbsup:

Waitrose have a 'waste is better' ideology. For example selling a damaged product isn't good for their brand image, so they try and avoid selling it at all. Instead they reduce it and sell it to their staff, or just destroy it.
I'm sure Tesco arent the same though...

Beef muscle meat not exposed to oxygen (in vacuum packaging, for example) is a burgundy or purplish color. After exposure to the air for 15 minutes or so, the myoglobin receives oxygen and the meat turns bright, cherry red.

Thus as a matter of fact brown beef is fine to munch on! Although obviously if its been in the fridge for over 5 days and is turning brown and has a bad smell about it then its past its eating stage :thumbsup:

If the item clearly isn't edible e,g. mouldy, ood, severely damaged then it will be disposed of, but 90% of items are still clearly edible and people will eat it
