I have a lttle Polo (old one N reg), was my younget daughters 'learn to drive' car, I never sold it when she passed her test (She now has aCorsa) as it has been worth too much when others have broken down, they borrow it. My eldest daughter is always borrowing it when hers need to go in garage ,which has been quite a lot recently. the little Polo has been so useful as an extra car as insurance is only £100 fully comp for the year and low tax. My problem is her car broke down and went into garage over the week-end , as most of you know she is a singer and borrowed my little polo while hers was being fixed, its only 1100 cc but she drives it like its a sports car, anyway main thing is she is safe. We have had it towed 30 miles last night to my local garage and they said it would be about £200 plus the cost of a new engine (another £200). New tyres on it just passed mot and bodywork is excelptional so what do I do. Any advise PLEASE
Sorry to ramble Im so confussed, wanted to know if anyone knew if you could get reconditioned engines for this age car as my garage saif I would have to have a scrap engine but Im taking a chance with a scrap engine!

You probably could get a reconditioned engine from a specialist, but you'd pay top dollar. Could probably buy a scrap engine and have that reconditioned, but you'd probably be looking at £600ish. If you can find a lowish milage scrap engine it should be fine, just check the compression, gasket etc before buying it.

Hope that helps :)

tbh i would get the car scrapped. u might get up to £50 for it so in total uve got £450 to spend. With things right now in the car industry u'll find a very good deal on a 2nd hand car if u look around and haggle alot. Cos this time of year ppl aint really looking to buy cars so im sure u'll pik up a gr8 baragain
#3
Yeah, my reply was based on you wanting to keep the car, but if you're happy to buy another car then that'd be cheaper

have to agree. its beyond economic repair.

maybe break it yourself so spares as you'd get far more than £50

and reclaim the tax asap

A bit of punctuation would make this alot easier to read, meaning you might get more replies. Did you change the oil and service it regularly?

I am sorry about the punctuation I just sat down, felling so low, and though I would post on here because people are so very very nice and helpful, I wasn't thinking about my grammar or punctuation, but you are right my daughter keeps telling me to take my time, my keyboard doesnt always do what it should, I cant see the markings on it it it so worn:oops:
#7
So £400 for a new engine fitted? Seems a bargain to me if you like the car.

Bit harsh that when someone is worried and confused, check your own post:x

Last time i knew the scrap value was low low low.

Break it and sell the parts.

Thank you all for replying and taking the time to read my post, I guess I will have to say goobye to it - although still not sure, sometimes so hard to 'let go', its been such a lovely little car. But to be honest last time she borrowed it - about six months ago I had it back and had to have the engine rebored, that cost £300.
sorry to ramble things are far more important out there.
Thanks again guys :) X

ring the scrap yards as i got an engine for mine last year was only 60 quid and paid someone 50 to fit it and its better then the original engine a was from a newer model. and would of cost more to buy another car which also would have been old

I wasn't being nasty, just saying that sometimes people start reading a post, then find it too difficult to follow, so move on. The comment about oil and servicing was also meant to be helpful. I never used to bother looking after my cars, but it's amazing what a little bit of effort can save you in the future. Low oil levels can mean saying goodbye to an otherwise good car.

maybe your daughter should pay for the repairs as its obvious her driving has done the engine damage :-

"its only 1100 cc but she drives it like its a sports car"

"last time she borrowed it - about six months ago I had it back and had to have the engine rebored"

she has blown the engine up completely now. 1100cc cars like a polo are not meant to be thrashed like a sports car!

I understand what your saying and i agree with the oil and water advice but time and place springs to mind.

Personally I'd sell your daughter to cover the cost of repair! :p She seems to be costing you a fortune breaking your car twice... :) Joking of course but I think she should understand that car represents a lot more to you than she assumes if you are short of cash.

Difficult, but cars are an unknown. If the rest of it looks ok and you get an MOT for a year £400 investment is not bad. If you buy elsewhere you haven't a clue what you are buying... simple fact is secondhand cars are a risk, older and cheaper are more of a risk and at a few hundred quid there are no guarantees.
#17
The Op makes little sense. Reading it i am unsure whether your'e saying her corsa has blown up or the Polo has.
#18
That's been covered mate.

Has the mechanic put in a diagnostics computer? where are you based does the ignition come on? I think the mechanic is trying to rip you off unless the engine went bang and there are pieces of engine everywhere it should start.

edit: There's a 1.4 AEX from an N reg Polo near me at the scrap yard, not sure how much they would charge though

easiest option sure, just need to press the brakes a bit harder, but seriously did the ignition come on ? I've got a VAGCOM that brings up error codes from the computer, what exactly did he say had happened to the engine. Cambelt snapped or something?

Exactly and contrary to what others are saying, the price of small engined sh cars is on the increase because of demand. Pretty much a sellers market at that end at the moment.
#24
you can buy a whole N reg polo on thiefbay for £450 (200285427593) If it's cost you money in the past, I'd cut your losses and sell it for spares/repair.

Sold the g/f's M reg Polo 1.3 for £350 was in very good condition with all the extras but we were in a hurry to sell as the stealorship had only offered £200 in part exchange.

Lumoruk, let's be honest, he probably took a sharp intake of breath through his pursed lips, tutted, shook his head and said something like "It's not good". I doubt he fully explained the problem. I hope I haven't offended any mechanics or the poster, but there's a good chance that this is what happened.
Thanks Mike, you too.

I don't get ripped off by mechanics any more since learning how to do 80% of the stuff on my car myself, have been badly burnt in the past when I first got it :x

And last week the brother in law sold a J plate Clio, a total munter that I spent 3 days welding for the mot for £350. I wouldn't have given him a fiver for it. People are mad with the money when they think of the tax savings.

oh shengis here's those pictures I forgot about.

Looking good, nice and even. About 2 fingers gap?

£400 seems worth it to me, as you know that everything else is fine. We just got £10 for scrapping an N reg Astra this morning - the bottom has fallen out of the scrap market. Also, I think that you could probably get a good deal on an engine from a scrap merchant, if you had people who know what they're doing - which, of course, I don't.

Cheer up poppet!!

to keep it on topic here is a Polo M reg 1.3 AED engine and the g/f's old car what the OP is referring to, for reference you can use parts from a 1.4 AEX engine on this 1.3 :prop::thinking:

its not that - its just that it has proved invaluable, already, my sister has borrowed it my daughter often borrows it, she would have lost quite a bit of money lately if not for the little extra car - so so hard to decide and I am a bit attached to it - I know I shouldnt get attached to cars but it has been a little gem

dont know - its at the garage - my daughter said first oil light came on, she was on the mororway, so she started coming up the slip road and the whole dashboard light up then she just tried to get somewhere safe - she heard a big bang first, rac came and said engines gone, took to garage and it was agreed. I had the valves done about 6 months ago.

sorry didnt see your reply I have been trying to ring scrap merchants without a lot of luck so far, cheapest I can get is one that has done 89,000 miles, thats more than the one that just blew and they want £200 plus vat for that
