yeh but this a dedicated post about it, they also get free nhs parking, and free prescrytions soon for everything, oh university fees are free in Scotland but English students - of their parents - have to fork out £3000 a year. It means a student in England pays £12000 to take a four-year degree while a Scottish one pays nothing.

THEY ALL LIVE HIGH LIFE ON OUR TAXES

SCOTLAND will have the highest state spending in the WORLD next year...paid for by us in ENGLAND.

New figures show that it is set to overtake Sweden as the country with the highest spending per head on public services.

But the total amount of tax paid by Scots is one of the LOWEST in the world.

And today a News of the World investigation exposes the true scale of the Scottish subsidy that has English people seething - and is threatening to rip the United Kingdom apart.

By next year state spending in Scotland will reach £60.2 BILLION, according to the figuresfrom the Centre of Economic and Business Research. This works out as 55 PER CENT of its entire economy - higher than any other non-communist country.

Shortfall

Yet the tax haul north of the border is expected to be just £44 BILLION. It all adds up to a whopping £16 BILLION shortfall - which Scottish Prime Minister Gordon Brown and fellow Scot, Chancellor Alistair Darling, say has to be paid by English taxpayers.

We will have to subsidise every man, woman and child in Scotland to the tune of £3000 EACH. And that means English taxpayers having to fork out an extra £600 EACH.

So, while hard-working English folk scrimp and save to pay for university tuition, pre script ions, specialist drugs, dental and eye checks, school meals and care for the elderly, over the border they will get them absolutely FREE.

Here we reveal just what THEY are getting for nothing and what YOU are having to pay.

UNIVERSITY FEES are FREE in Scotland but English students - of their parents - have to fork out £3000 a year. It means a student in England pays £12000 to take a four-year degree while a Scottish one pays nothing.

PRESCRIPTION CHARGES are being SCRAPPED for Scots by First Minister Alex Salmond. In England we cough up £6.85 PER ITEM.

DENTAL CHECK-UPS and EYE TESTS are FREE for Scottish folk, while in England we pay an average of £15.90 for a dental check, and an eye test costs £18.85.

PERSONAL and NURSING CARE is FREE for the elderly in Scottish care homes. English OAPs are having to SELL their homes to pay for care.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT is FREE at all times for Scottish pensioners. In England it is just off-peak.

CENTRAL HEATING is also installed FREE for pensioners in Scotland - who get, on average, £11,000 A YEAR more in benefits and health care.
SCHOOL MEALS are FREE for all Scottish children between the of four and seven - soon to be extended to children of all ages. English families pay about £1.64 A DAY for their kids' school food.

SPECIALIST DRUGS for many serious illnesses are FREE in Scotland, but in England the NHS refuses to fund them. A Scottish patient with bone cancer can get the drug Velcade - but an English patient must pay £18,000 for it.

Similarly lung cancer drug Tarceva costs £20,000 in England and patients here must pay £4,000 per year for Macugen to stop them from losing their sight. Both are FREE in Scotland.

Last night Matthew Elliot, chief executive of the Taxpayers' Alliance hit out "It's shocking. Scotland should start paying its own way. It's unfair that English taxpayers have to pick up the tab."

The massive difference is down to the Barnett Formula, which was drawn up in the 70s and dictates where public money should be spent across the UK. But, since devolution, Scotland has been getting an increasingly disproportionate share of the spoils.

And Scots politicians' claims that it makes up for them "losing" North Sea Oil revenues don't hold water - they amount IN TOTAL to less than half the subsidy.

Gordon Brown has repeatedly ruled out any change - despite Lord Barnett, who drew up the formula, admitting it is unfair.

But Conservative leader David Cameron wants to review it - and to ban Scots MP's from voting on English issues at Westminster.

So if you hear large crash coming from north of the border you'll know what it'll be.

The sound of the Scottish gravy train hitting the buffers!

I ain't fishing :p Put it this way, when we eventually leave, England's punching bag will be Wales or Northern Ireland, both of which will need more money per person than England and according to the wiki wiki wild west even if those 2 countries left England all on it's tod there would then be complaining that somewhere doesn't get as much and somewhere else

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_Formula

North East £8,177 - 111% of UK average identifiable expenditure
North West £7,798 - 106%
Yorkshire and Humberside £7,188 - 98%
East Midlands £6,491 - 88%
West Midlands £7,065 - 96%
Eastern £6,144 - 83%
London £8,404 - 114%
South East £6,304 - 86%
South West £6,677 - 91%

YAWN what you crazy english don't mention that spending per head in London is far bigger than any other part of the uk so while we march towards independence maybe the rest of England should look closer to home and see what all the cash is being wasted on in london rather than moan because we have the sense to give the sick a helping hand and generally spend the cash more wisely.

Interesting read ants97, seems the Tabloids are at it again. You buy a newspaper in England and they'll be shouting about how Scotland is shafting England and in Scotland the same newspaper is shouting about how England is shafting Scotland!

Why let a little thing like facts get in the way of bigotry you'll ruin their fun......:whistling:

BTW a significant proportion of the taxpayers in England are not English......
#13
What about the "millions" of Scots living in England that also contribute to these financial figures you quote.
They are then surely subsidising the 100's of thousands of english who live in Scotland and "enjoy these benefits"
So who exactly are you trying to have a "dig" at ?????? The Scots or the people who live in Scotland?

Shows how little you know, Scottish tuition ISNT free, once you graduate you pay some of the money back.

My parents stay in Scotland and both are on income support due to my dad being ill, they dont get heating grants, they dont get eye tests as they are happy with their current glasses(my dads ones lasted 20 years before he got a new pair!)

And arent we forgetting Wales!!

England isnt this perfect country that pays for everything.

Also in proportion think about it, theres more people in London than Scotland therefore theres less people in Scotland to subsidise

Also many Scottish businesses have bases in England so its counted as English income not Scottish.

Theres so many cracks on both sides and its so easy to blame Scotland for any faults.

Also ironically on the tuition fees part, a English person studying in scotland pays about half what a Scottish person studying in England does

Is that fair?

And there is only about 14 universitys in Scotland so the amount of people in higher education is far lower.

You cant make judgements as both countries have totally different populations and lifestyles in a way.

That's actually false as that policy has now changed. Only pensioners who get pension credits now get free central heating.

Oh and Dental check ups are free ? I though they were only free if you are were receiving benefits , were over 65 or under 18 :?
