Ethernet Cable Plugged in but..

Ethernet Cable Plugged in but it is not connecting to the internet.. It shows the light on my laptop and it also displays the connected via ethernet cable in the taskbar. I dont understand what the issue is? Any ideas..?

Laptop: ACER 5920G
OS: Windows 7

Try plugging the cable into another computer from the router and check that the Internet is actually connected.

Yes, I have had this issue for sometime now.. The wireless works perfect however I want a wired connection for gaming reasons.

DId you try plugging the cable into another computer to see if it works there? If it works there, then its a problem with the laptop. if it doesnt work on the other computer, then theres a problem with the router.

How would I do that? What's the IP usually again, I have a feeling I tried that before and It did not work. But worth giving it another shot I guess

Ok, just tried connecting via etherenet to another computer and it worked. =/ Not sure what to do now

Nah, im with O2.. Speeds are good but over wireless I get in-game lag which is a bit of a pain.

Right, so problem exists in your laptop without a doubt.

The fact that another computer works just fine when using the ethernet cable would tell me something is wrong with the ethernet settings.

When your laptop is plugged in to your router via the cable, Click Start and type "cmd" without the quotation marks.

Once youve got the black command window up, type "ipconfig" and type back here what your see.

You will see either two types of number. One will 192.168.xx.xx and the other will be 169.254.xx.xx

Post back what number you see. Remember, before doing this, make sure the WiFi on your laptop is turned off so as it doesnt give you the IP from that instead.

I disabled the wireless and plugged in the ethernet cable and it came up with these numbers:

IPV4 Address: 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
192.168.1.254


When I plugged in my wireless connection and did the same thing it came up with these numbers:

IPV4 Address: 192.168.1.67
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

o2wirelessbox.lan and 192.168.1.254 are the same thing when you are using the O2 Wireless Router.

My best guess here is to open Network and Sharing Center inside the Control Panel, and click on Set Up a New Connection and just go through that in the hope it refreshes the ethernet settings needed to get it running.

Hmmm.. I am trying to create one however it is not letting me as it says it is connected. All the options seem to be for wireless.

Apologies for my noobiness - relatively new to windows 7.

So which is it? 0.0.0.0 or 192.168.1.254?

If the gateway is 0.0.0.0 that's why you cannot connect.

If you right click the network icon in the notifications area (lower right) do you get either a "Properties" or "Open Network Connections" menu option?

It has both of them. The 0.0.0.0 is on the first line and the other one is on the next line.

Currently not at home at the moment but will give it a shot when i get back and let you know.

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

If it were me I would delete the network connection and re-create it.

That did not work. It was the similar sort of loading style as you get if entering a normal website.

Oh okay, how would I insert the google DNS servers? Sorry >.< This area is definately not my area at all!

New one on me. *does quick google*.

Ahh, a feature of Windows 7. Even when logged in as administrator when you open a command prompt you don't always get administrator privileges. For the fix see here:

Hopefully I haven't left all this too late and some of you are still checking on this thread but I did the
ROUTE DELETE 0.0.0.0 and it seems to be working?

Know a more permanent fix for this?

It seems that the most like cause is that you have some Apple or Adobe software installed.

Either of these could have installed and old and buggy service called "Bonjour". Supposedly there is a fixed version of the Bonjour service but all the links I've tried to locate are now dead.

The simplest option is to disable the Bonjour service (it's only use is on small networks so that similar applications can find each other). Not sure how you do that on Windows 7 but it should be somewhere under the Administrator Tools.

Due to yet another bug in Bonjour it sometimes installs under the wrong name, so if you cannot see a service called Bonour look for "##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##" instead and disable it.

I do not have iTunes or any apple software on my computer and never have. Thanks for your input though
