Biggest Dutch retailer boycotts PSPgo

Holland's largest specialised retail outlet, Nedgame, has decided not to sell the PSPgo this October. And, the shop explained to Eurogamer Holland, there are a handful of reasons why.

The hefty price-tag of €249.99 being one of them. That's €80 more than the PSP-3000 costs, a difference Nedgame believes the new handheld does not justify - the smaller screen is picked out as an example.

A more telling reason is the lack of a UMD drive. That means Nedgame cannot sell games for the PSPgo, which is where retailers make the most profit. And, as downloadable games will be tied to PSN accounts, trading and swapping will fast become a thing of the past.

Nedgame also mentioned its discomfort at Sony creating a monopoly on the software sold on PSPgo.

Eurogamer Holland goes on to point out that Nedgame are not the only Dutch outlet to boycott Sony's new handheld.

Eurogamer Spain has also heard rumblings that retailers there may do the same.

You can understand their point of view, once theyve flogged the psp and made a tiny amount on it, thats it, they are giving all their business to Sony. Of course the GO will never sell enough for this to be a reality but its surel a sign of the way things are going

no i cant really tbh......all games are going that way eventually regardlerss so its either adapt now or cut ties with sony and when the next version of the playstation console comes out......downloads only they are gonna be screwed and do you really think ms next console is not gonna be downloads?

go figure

the GO will fail spectacularly-nintendo have the handheld market cornered-the idea of small downloadable games is appealing but mobile phones will evolve more and more to that market-they will never compete with nintendo, they will never compete with the apple apps.

If sony had serious designs on the handheld market this should be 99 quid and then they could make the money from downloads-their marketing strategy on the go is unfathomable.

apple is technically the largest handheld gaming device and that means nothing atm

nintendo and sony are ained at completely different audiences also

times are a changing

I think it'll be a good few years before we see a "next-gen" console launch without an optical drive for games.

As for the PSP.................................. I still have an old fat one lying around, it never really appealed to me as a gamer. I would never consider buying a DS.

Sony probably know that it wont be long before it is hacked and people will be getting there games for free,The only way for them to make money will be the hardware,

no console is going to be download only for many many years, if ever. The PSPGO will be testament to why it will be a massive failure.

If sony release say the PS4 as download only, Microsoft will release the 'Xbox 1080' with 'real' games and vastly outsell them. The second hand market and retail sector are far too be to just be pushed to the side by greedy console makers.

what you mean like when the ps3 got hacked
#12
i think the best stratergy for any of these companies to follow right now would be to develop a closed gaming platform entirely in software that can be licensed out to or sold and installed on numerous different devices. with phones and who knows what else getting so powerful. why not build an engine that could say run on the iphone, the pre, etc. that will then play games written for that engine. even now, how popular to do reckon a licensed gameboy advanced emulator for the iphone would be. with games for £3 a pop.

there's no profit in hardware anyway so the focus should be to develop the best software layer, the provides and easy but powerful platform for coding on, and cross compatibility.

The ps3 hasnt been hacked because blu ray copying isnt freely available so its not worth anyone hacking it. There isnt a machine invented that hasnt/cant be hacked and the pspgo isnt going to be the first

the main reasons the ps3 hasnt been hacked is due to the numerous updates required to both games and the firmware......what is a next generation console without online play exactly?

pointless discussing issues with people who ignore the facts and start bringing up irrelevent crap

the games cannot be copied and played online on a ps3 simple as that

allps3 games are reulary updated with patches and so is the firmware to prevent piracy......eventually this will be the standard as it has proven to of worked
#20
whatsThePoint
If you don't connect your PS3 online how does all these updates take effect?
And hacking a patch is far simpler than hacking a game

Forget it mate, your talking to someone who knows it all, including the future, there's nothing you can teach this guy

Oh really. So ~25million iphones and ~20million ipod touches is more than 100million+ Nintendo DS & DSi? As you say...

thats my point mate you wont be able to play them online which is why its not been hacked in the true sense of the word .......as in being able to play copied games

like i said before who wants a next generation console and then not play online

ps3 will never be cracked properly and every console released now will be following suit

good luck to the hackers i say but i think to be able to fully access all the features within the psn and eventually xbox live you will need to do it legitimately.....thats the future
