Make no bones about it, further integration is on the cards for any country remaining in the EU.

In Europe's Last Chance, Guy Verhofstadt-former prime minister of Belgium and current leader of the liberal faction in the European Parliament-provides the essential framework for understanding Europe today, laying bare the absurdity of a system in which each member state can veto legislation, opt in or out of the Euro, or close borders on a whim. But Verhofstadt does not just indict the European Union, he also offers a powerful vision for how the continent can change for the better. The key, argues Verhofstadt, is to reform the European Union along the lines of America's federal government: a United States of Europe strong enough to stand with the United States of America in making a better, safer world. A visionary book from one of today's luminaries of European leadership, Europe's Last Chance is a clarion call to save the European Union, one of the world's greatest chances for peace and prosperity

An illustration of why it's inevitable the EU will fail.

A united Europe could be a force for good in the world, especially as China takes a more active role.

I agree but i am not sure ever closer political and financial union is the way to go in uniting a disparate group of nations, from what i can see Europe is the most divide its been since 1945 with large swathes of its population unhappy with the way things are progressing and "alternate" political parties growing in popularity all the time.

But then i am not sure i am capable of looking at things from your average continental Europeans point of view perhaps they have a different angle on it than i do.

you won't have that long to wait, plenty of elections coming to an EU country near you this year.

You hit the nail on the head, the north south divide gets even greater, just look at USA to see where the pockets of wealth are clustering. In Europe the clustering is there already and it will surge forward with total integration, all for better competition.
.
However the best solution is one country,a United States of Europe, no more sovereignty dummies, just one single government , just like United Kingdom's model.

In fact, EU could be renamed as The Greater United Kingdoms;
which ironically is also the last chance for United Kingdom to be united with Scotland, Wales and NI.
