I know of a few friends that did it. They went into it after uni as the property market crashed. To be honest, its long hours, alot of cold calling or semi cold calling. They promise the world but it takes up to 6 months to see any real benefit to what you have been doing. (commission wise, promotion from trainee consultant etc.

This is just one company though, so def dont take what ive said as general.


There is money to be earned if you wanna work hard, fast, be cut throat and work long hours.

Working in IT I can tell you recruitment agencies can be an ultra annoyance. The job must be predominantly akin to telesales. Fine if you like that sort of thing but personally I'd hate to do it.

recruitment agencies everywhere are a pain in the a***, they do very little for what they actually get paid

I spent one month doing recruitment. I hated it. It was horrible. Some people have it in them to be cut throat ****. I didnt. I suggest trying it out to find out. You might have a completely different experience.

Thanks John, appreciate your comments. I've a good appreciation of the long hours and the hard selling associated with the role. I'd be interested to hear if the OTE salaries for such jobs are achievable - especially in the current climate...?

Plus they are generally looked down on by other people. Bit like estate agents but a bit more greasy imo.

Its a shame, but it is a dressed up telesales job. Until you make the big time, and people do that for you

I found the best piece of advice in dealing with recruitment agencies is to never give them your direct line number, always give them your main line to the receptionist. It's amazing how "busy" you can be when they call constantly.

My experience of them has been that they're soul-destroying hell-holes that complete *expletive deleted" seem to do best in. If you're happy screwing people over then you'll make a fair whack, although you will spend your days putting people in positions that give them more job satisfaction and enjoyment then your's.

I suppose that's where the bitterness and 'f-u' attitude comes from.

Hi, I have worked in recruitment for 10yrs and loved every minute of it, I think as long as you stay level headed (as I agree with other peoples posts some consultants can be annoying and up their own backsides thinking they are better than the candidate or client) be honest and listen to what the candidate and client want and although you are working to your targets dont screw anyone over or force them to accept a job as you will end up giving a rebate anyway. i have always said my job was a glorified telesales girl, i am no different to those people that call you up to sell windows apart from i sell people. you will either love the industry or not. i would always go for a good basic as ote doesnt do it for me, not the fact that i cannot do targets but your basic is what pays your bills etc your commission is your pretty money. i cannot speak for IT as i have always done commercial, office staff etc. although when the market is tough and people are not recruiting especially when people nowadays (good skilled people) are being made redundant companies dont need to go to agencies as the market is saturated with exceptionally good candidates. so then they dont need consultants :( and i unfortunately got made redundant, although the market has picked up slightly i just enjoying not working at the moment. hope the above makes sense i never use commas or fullstops lol and just type and ramble. whatever you choose good luck

I worked in finance recruitment for a few months and now I'm a HR and Legal Counsel Manager for a large multinational IT firm. The OTEs they promise you (100k in your first year) are TOTALLY unrealistic! It is such a depressing job... it's essentially cold calling and long hours! There's a lot of pressure to hit targets and you can't trust anyone. I know people who've hated every second of it, and I know people who love it! If you're good at what you do, you can make a lot, but it depends massively on the company you work for. You need to bear in mind their commission structure and expected targets as that makes a big difference. More than likely, you won't get a huge salary from it unless you're very good. If you do do it, be prepared to be spoken to like **** (I recruited for major universities for £120k a year candidates and they still spoke to me like I was an idiot!) and work stupidly long hours (ie 8am until 7pm)! I only did it in Uni summer holidays and it wasn't for me... I hated pretty much every aspect of it, especially the backstabbing and having to lie to candidates just because targets were immense! Oh, also, doing what I do now I get approx 10 calls a day from agencies... The minority of which we actually deal with! We only use very niche companies who specialise in what they do (ie not just "IT recruitment" but "Oracle recruitment") etc because they generally know the market and candidates much better.

If you have a degree and talent this job is NOT for you . I interned and was promised a fantastic grad scheme ... Sold dream. Long long hours and immense pressure . You don't need any academic talent and it's waste of your tuition - targets so high you end up being a churning machine pounding the phone to get 1/50 calls getting thru to one ! It's soul destroying and it's all about numbers! I have so much more to bring to the table than just a number churner !
