Everything I download is corrupt.

I'm starting to see a pattern on my network now, for a few months I haven't been able to download any programs or files, just regular stuff that usually download for example I tried to download firefox and AVG for my new laptop and keep getting error messages.

Also on my PS3 the file stops at 14% installing when it's downloaded so I think these are related, any ideas?

whats your network?

Are you using a wireless network?
Try connecting something directly to the router.
Check if someone nearby is using the same Wi-Fi channel using a program like Inssider
Update router firmware.
Hard Reset the router

The thing with my router is that I forgot my login details, it was my cousin who set it up for me a while ago but even though I was sure what the login details were i just can't get in to it anymore.

If you type 192.168.1.1 into your browser you should be able to access your router settings from there and change your password. Username and password by default to get into it would be "admin".

I set a password up though and now I can't remember it because I didn't access it for about a year.

Assuming its configured on that subnet with that username and password.

All routers will have a reset button/hole on them that brings back to factory defaults. If you connect using ADSL then you'll need your user details when setting back up again. Try to download the manual or search for the default username and password on the internet before you do any of this though.

On Windows Vista/7, click start and type CMD in the bar. On XP, Click start, then run then CMD

On the window that appears, type ipconfig and look for default gateway - that is the address of your router. Open a browser and put that address in and you should be at your router page - first change the default user/password as this is a security risk if your network is compromised.

Then you should be able to review all of the settings and make adjustments.

As I said above, you can reset it by following the details I posted.

Ah right, I'll try that then, sorry i only glanced over your post, woops.
#10
No probs - sorry its probably information overload.
#11
So am i searching for the default username and password for virgin media internet or for netgear router?
#12
You want the default username and password for the netgear router - look for a label that provides the model number.
#13
Ah googled for it and I'm now i my router, i will try and update the router and see if that helps.

DO NOT UPDATE WIRELESSLY!

Honestly, it can kill your router so so easily, I did it, and it took me hours pinging it and finally I got it working again via cmds etc, but a lot of the time it will kill it.

I'm connected by ethernet.

Just reading on the Internet that you really shouldn't update virgins routers as they have their own firmware for it.
#18
you are not updating the modem, the netgear router is separate but not a good idea anyway as its likely the firmware will corrupt on its way down rendering it a brick, try resetting the virgin modem and contact their tech support see if they can update it for you.
