The tail end of my exhaust pipe has dropped off. Is it legal to drive without it? There's no "boy racer" noise coming from my exhaust.

better to get it fixed as you ll end up with a hole in it otherwise which makes the boy racer noise then you would have to fix it anyway

And depending where it has broken off, you could be getting fumes in the car.

^------- this. If it didn't need the end part, it wouldn't be there. Get it fixed as soon as you can.

I don't think it would pass an MOT with out it, But don't think it's illegal unless it's making excessive noise but I would have it replaced sooner than later.

If it won't pass a MOT then surely it'll be illegal?

Surely its not illegal until it gets MOT'd again....then it will most likely fail the emmissions test, then it will be illegal to drive it.

I know from experience that if you lose half the exhaust your car will run pretty rough and fuel consumption go through the roof - I guess it depends on the car and just how much 'tail end' has dropped off but it'll be better to replace it sooner rather than later...

If you're not making excessive noise there'd be little chance of attracting unwanted attention; but as I understand it your car should be able to pass an MOT any day of the year - if it can't it's not legal.

I doubt it would fail an MOT. You can use a length of scaffold bar as a tailpipe if you choose. Only dodgy bit, as said, is the possibility of fumes entering the car but these days thats hardly a problem either.....

Car would struggle to run properly and effieciently as has been said short term you would get away with it but long term you risk damage to the car....

You'll never sell that theory to the people who buy 'universal performance backboxes' via ebay X)

And i'm also betting the OP's car is running fine without it....

If it's just the tip of the exhaust, i,e very end of the back box I'd doubt that would have much impact on performance, It's only an exit point.
