The only way would be to buy a sata card and run stuff off that.

What that sata card does is give you more slots.

or you could get a sata to ide converter if you have a free ide slot

If you are wanting to run opticals on the SATA add on card choose wisely as they can be a nightmare to get to work as intended. The SATA addon cards are geared towards hard drive use, particular RAID configurations and the EEPROM will need re written to use with Optical drives on most and even then that can be troublesome.

Yeah, it's an expansion card that goes into a PCI or PCI-Express slot and gives you a couple more ports per card.

One like this would give you four more ports, or you could go for a cheaper 2 port version.

THanks,
I just want a sata connection to run the front usb ports available on my tower, and the current two i am using is for the hard drive and the optical drive, so what would you suggest I do i.e what shall i use the pci card for and the normal sata connections for? thanks

Bit confused about the above about your usb ports but but I think you mean you just wanna use the 2 front usb to do other stuff.

Howevere try and get a sata card that uses silicon image 3112/3512/3114 chipset but try and find one from a user/company that has managed to flash them to be non raid.

Can you not upgrade your motherboard ?

you dont use sata ports for your front usb ports. you use internal usb ports for that

they look like this http://www.legitreviews.com/images/reviews/706/asus_m3nht_cmos.jpg

sata ports are a different shape http://tiplet.com/wp-content/uploads/sata.jpg

emm my front port usb is linked to a sata cable, (like all the 4 ports are joined to a sata cable) which is the only connection i see that connects to the motherboard. thts y i need an extra sata connection.

It won't be sata.

maybe so but I for one would still like to know how he has got a hard drive and optical drive connected to that computer from his earlier description

It could be Sata, although I have never heard of it or seen it before (on a case), but I guess it makes sense.

Additional Sata ports though, now that could be an issue. As other people have said, most of these Sata addon cards (PCI/PCIe) are designed for hard drives, so in theory you could have trouble using it for an optical/usb connection. You would obviously move your hard drive onto the addon card and then use the motherboards 2 Sata for the USBs and Optical drive.

By the way, is this a branded case from a well known manufacturer or one of these random point of sale steel things?
