One person has been injured in an explosion at a shopping centre restaurant in Devon.

Police are investigating the cause of the blast at the Princess Hay Shopping Centre in Exeter.

The incident happened when a man walked into the Giraffe restaurant, say reports at around 1pm today.

Nearby properties have been evacuated.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire And Rescue Service said 18 firefighters were dealing with the incident.

He said details are still coming in, and the seriousness of the blast is not yet known.

Devon and Cornwall Police were unavailable for comment.

Sounds worryingly familiar

Princess Hay is a new shopping centre development in Exeter, open for less than a year I think. Lots of shops in a compacted area. Such a studenty area, with the University and Colleges, I really hope all involved aren't seriously injured and that it was a fault somewhere, not a bomb.

Yes it has been open for less than a year.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, only hearsay, but there has been definitely 1 bomb go off and based on other websites, another 2/3 suspected. The whole of our High Street has been cordoned off and evacuated.

Knowing Exeter...

I would say it was some dodgy gas fitting in the cafe...

I am fine thank you.
Its so strange though as the whole of town has been cordoned off but our office hasnt. We are literally a couple of strides from the High Street. So quiet it is eerie.

Some speculation.....
*** has been evacuated from Lloyds Private Banking at the top of Southernhay, she told me she managed to stop and speak to a reporter who has said they believe it to have been an Animal rights Protestor, who went into the Loo’s in the Giraffe Restaurant too assemble the bomb but whist doing so, it went off, they believe the bomb was intended for Boots the Chemist (Possibly as they are a large Pharmaceutical Company). This has not been confirmed as yet but they are sure this was the case***

An animal rights protestor, seems kind of ironic it accidentally went off in Giraffe. I still hope it was a fault, though if it was intentional, it is unforgivable.

that'll teach em not to beat cambridge united at wembley!

..but you kind of have to ask...what was someone doing with the equipment in the first place in the middle of a bustling town?

BBC website
Eyewitness Peter Lacey who was in the restaurant with his wife told BBC News: "There were three explosions. It is my impression they sounded more like gunshots than a bomb, like a lightbulb exploding.

"They came from a locked toilet."

I wonder if he recommends the chilli bean burittos?

LOL.
#35
Any updates?
#36
Just see this on Sky news
#37
Sky news dont seem particularly concerned. Said that there was a small blast and 1 person has been injured and is being held in custody. Local buildings have been evacuated as a precaution
#38
One white bloke in his twenties in custody, converted to Islam.
#39
Yep, BBC is implying terrorism and saying the 'vulnerable' chap from Plymouth was 'preyed upon' and converted to extremist Islam. You hardly expect this type of act in little old Exeter.
#40
I live in Plymouth...I hope they don't do it here next time.
