Some of the 20GB is being used up as that is where you operating system is stored as well as programs installed. Hope that helps.

Not on an external hard drive it isn't, unless the virtual memory settings have been played with.

If there are no files on it. Try formatting it (right click it in my computer and click Format...) Sometimes files that go corrupt just disappear or are deleted by windows but the space isn't marked as empty for whatever reason. Not saying that formatting it will definitely get the space back but it might do...
Another reason could be faulty sectors on the HDD, do a disk check (right click the drive in computer, properties, click the tools tab then under error checking click check now...)

Turn on the setting to "display hidden files" and "display system files".

There may well be some hidden fies on the disk that you dont know about.

I maybe be wrong but sometimes the HDD aren't around to the given number. Noticed they can go less or over.

Try using TreeSize tool, it's a free tool to show where space is being used and what by.

or windirstat http://windirstat.info/

btw though as mentioned above 297-298 will be the right size of the drive as hdd manufacturers use base 10 ....1000 meg per gig as opposed to an operating system which uses base 2 and 1024 meg per gig

But saying that you only wanted to know where your 20 gig went

Cheers sorted problem out...traded it in to cex (i was gona do that anyway) its not faulty, i think it just rounds the space down when talking about free space and rounds up when talking about capacity????
